Former Appropriation Committee Chairman, Abdulmumin Jibrin, says the House committee on Ethics and Priviledges of breached their agreement.
Jubrin says “he told the Chairman of the Committee, Nicholas Ossai, in a telephone conversation, that he would appear before the committee only if the press are allowed to cover the committee’s proceedings,” reports Sahara Reporters.
He adds that Hon Ossai agreed to this. But he latter heard that the press wouldn’t be allowed to witness the proceedings.
Mr. Jibrin also cautioned the committee to respect the court, since the issue is subject to litigation. And that his lawyer wrote a letter to the committee to that effect.
The Ethics and Privileges Committee started its sitting on Monday and waited for Jubrin to appear before it on Tuesday.
The chairman of the committee, however, said that they would take Jubrin’s non-appearance as defence.
Jubrin got in this situation after accusing key members of the House, including the speaker, of over N4 billion 2016 Budget Padding.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola says statements made about the possible closure of the nation’s power supply chain is “inflammatory and insensitive to Nigeria’s national security”.
The minister’s statement is a reaction to one made by Mr. Dallas Peavey Jr, Managing Director of Egbin Power Plc.
Mr Peavey said that the nations will experience severe power outages in the coming weeks. This, he said, is due to the drop in liquidity and gas for operations at Egbin. And they will be forced to shut down operations if the situation stays the same.
“If the commentator was not [sic] introspective, he would mention that the debts were not incurred by this administration, and that debt and settlement are continuous events in the power value chain, bills are served, claims are made, they are verified and settled”, the Minister said.
On another statement, making the rounds, that the power grid cannot support 1300MW. The minister says the grid has the capacity to support 5300MW.

How often does the average Nigerian accuse those in power of incompetence and corruption?
How often have they done something about it?
You might say they took a step by voting in a new government at the centre. A bold step. But you have heard these same people talk about how the “corrupt” situation at the time is much better than their current experience.
What brings this up is that the average person or complainant isn’t necessarily looking to change the polity- their aim is to better themselves regardless of who’s in power and what they do.
The attitude is more of “if I’m okay, then things are going well with the nation.” If there’s a strain on me, then something is wrong with the government. Without factoring that they might be on the wrong side of the law.
It’s basic human instinct.
And that is the experience across board in states where the governors challenged the status quo.
Take Lagos for example where the state government is demolishing illegal buildings and those under high tension wires. The move which naturally should be commended is not accepted across board.
“There was mixed feeling in the area as some people applauded the state government, while the new owners condemned it,” Vanguard reports.
On the other side of the spectrum is the Ekiti state government. Ekiti the state government organises regular programs to dole out cash and food items to the populace.
“It’s an ongoing thing, we didn’t just start today, today’s program is meant to alleviate the suffering of the people, to help them in keeping body and soul together, this is the one for the widows, we have done for people in some other sectors that needs to be supported” the Governor is quoted as saying in a Premium Times report.
“It’s a way of life, we are doing it continuously and we’ll not stop.”
And they turn out in mass.
Pointing out that people want things to get better but don’t want to bear any burden in the process.
So when LIB reported that the Edo APC is sharing Akara in the state, one is taken aback that politicians still have to engage such crude practice to appease electorates.
And when you consider that that the government in the state took some unpopular decisions, one tends to see reason.
But does this speak of poverty in the state or just the carrot and the stick approach?
Here’s how LIB put it:
“Ahead of the Wednesday September 28th governorship election, APC members in Edo state have set up these free Akara spots in the state where residents can go and collect free Akara to feed.”

The Senate Committee on FCT’s Chairman, Senator Dino Melaye ordered that residents of the FCT are at liberty to slaughter cows found grazing at the city centre.
He said this when the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Bello, appeared before the committee, Vanguard reports.
Melaye added the herdsmen are flouting the law since they were banned from leading their cattle to the city centre.
“The Senate is not happy at how herdsmen continue to move their cows across the city centre, which we are aware you had given directive against some time ago,” he said. “From now on, get knives and ask your men to slaughter cows found in the capital city or prosecute herdsmen seen with cows in the city centre with a fine of N50,000 per cow. This order must be carried out,” he added.

President Buhari says the nation has the capacity to overcome its current challenges.
He said this while addressing the President of the African Development Bank (ADB), Dr Akinwunmi Adesina.
“God has given us people and resources. It will take hard work on our part, but we will make it. We will get out of our problems. We are determined to produce what we eat, and stop importation. We will also chase those who stole, and get them to refund,” the President said.
Adesina, on the other hand, praised the efforts of the FG in handing the situation at hand, including curbing Boko haram in the North-east.
“You can count on the ADB as a true friend of Nigeria. You should support massive investment in infrastructure, and we are here to also support. Closing the infrastructure deficit will enable growth, and create employment. Nigeria is too big to fail,” he added.
Adesina also spoke on the plans ADB has on ground to support the Nigerian Government. Some of these include:
“$1 billion of budget support, $300 million to create jobs for 185,000 youths, $250 million towards North East infrastructure development, $1 million grant to deal with challenges of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), $300 million for infrastructure development around Abuja, $200 million for Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to deepen facilities, among others,” LIB reports.

The Nigerian Labour Congress says it’s mobilizing its members to embark on a nationwide protest against the proposed sale of national assets.
NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, see the proposal as reckless, as it will only benefit a small group of capitalists and government associates.
The NLC mobilized a joint committee with the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to dialogue with the FG over the proposed sale of national assets. Wabba, however, says if that channel fails, the NLC will mobilize its members in protest.
He adds that the NLC is considering suing the FG. And it has about 20 lawyers who’ve indicted interest in pursuing the case on its behalf.
He also says the body is looking into alternative means that the government cam employ.

Nigeria’s crude oil production suffered fresh set back Monday as Trans Niger Pipeline, (TNP), which exports about 180, 000 barrels of crude oil per day was shut down as a precautionary measure after a fire was seen on the “right of way” at Gio community in Ogoni land, one of the two pipelines that export Bonny Light crude oil. TNP transports crude oil to the Bonny Export Terminal and is part of the liquid gas evacuation infrastructure, critical for continued domestic power generation (Afam VI power plant) and liquefied gas exports.
According to the spokesman for Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC), the operator of the joint venture with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Precious Okolobo, “It was not yet clear whether export supplies will be subject to force majeure. A joint investigation visit will determine the cause and impact of the fire.” The line is also the right of way for a Bonny-refinery pipeline belonging to the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), a subsidiary of NNPC. A project officer with a local environmental rights group, Kentebe Ibiaridor, said: “The fire is huge and still raging when I left, we do not know the cause of fire yet, whether it is sabotage or system failure. Bonny Light crude is also exported through the Nembe Creek Trunk Line. On Saturday, the Niger Delta Avengers, a group that has claimed responsibility for a string of attacks on Nigerian oil infrastructure this year, said it had struck a Bonny Light pipeline, ending several weeks of calm under a ceasefire with the government. A spokesman for the militants had said in an emailed statement that the attack on Saturday was in the sea near Bonny island, making it unclear whether the incidents were related. Recall that SPDC shut down the Trans Niger Pipeline on the 11th of July 2016, following a leak at same location in Ogoniland, and SPDC said then that the line was shut down following a leak at Gio in Ogoniland. The joint probe of the leaks and corresponding spills is done with the federal government agency, the Nigeria Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA). The other major pipeline, the Nembe Creek Trunk Line (NCTL) that transports Bonny Light to port was operating normally, several industry sources said. Local upstream firm, Aiteo, operates the NCTL. The force majeure had been announced after a leak was found on the NCTL on May 11.
