If you’re like most, you probably feel better after getting outside. But did you know that science actually backs that up? Research has found that spending time outdoors can actually make you healthier, whether you head to the mountains, the beach, a lake or the woods. Getting outside helps your body, as well as your brain.
1. You’ll have better short-term memory
In a study conducted by the University of Michigan, students were given a short memory test before being divided into two separate groups. One group went for a walk down a city street, while the other took a stroll around an arboretum. When they returned, both groups took the test again, and those who had walked among the trees did nearly 20% better than they did the first time. The other group didn’t see any consistent improvement.
Researchers concluded that spending time in nature was able to boost working memory more than walking through an urban environment. It’s not the first study to discover this, and many people know firsthand that they tend to recharge better when relaxing in a natural setting, as compared to a busy city street.
2. You may age more gracefully
Research conducted in 2008 by Jerusalem, Israel’s Hadassah Hebrew University Medical Center found that getting outside every day may help older people stay healthy and enjoy a higher quality of life for longer. Study participants who spent time outdoors on a daily basis had fewer complaints like aching bones and sleep issues among other health-related problems, as compared to those who didn’t.
Spending time outdoors also helps to lessen stress, and as stress can contribute to premature aging, it offers double the benefit when it comes to aging more gracefully. Another benefit is weight loss – and as we age, it can be tough to maintain an ideal weight. That’s because being outside makes exercise feel easier and more enjoyable – which means you’re more likely to get moving outdoors, and for a longer period of time. Even if you aren’t actually trying to exercise, some outdoor elements, like mountains, can contribute directly to weight loss. In fact, just spending time in high altitude elevations can help one shed pounds as the higher elevation is known to boost the metabolism and even reduce hunger cravings.
3. You’ll feel happier
Getting outdoors and spending time in nature makes people feel more alive, according to research published in the June 2010 issue of the Journal of Environmental Psychology. That’s because in addition to decreasing stress, it offers a shift toward a more positive mood, with the theory behind it being that we naturally respond more positively to something that’s good for us. Furthermore, daylight tends to elevate one’s mood, and unless you happen to live in a glass house, you’ll probably get more sunlight outside than you would indoors.
Richard Ryan, lead author and professor of psychology at the University of Rochester noted, “Nature is fuel for the soul. Often when we feel depleted, we reach for a cup of coffee, but research suggests a better way to get energized is to connect with nature.”
4. You might heal faster
In 2005, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh reported that patients who underwent spinal surgery experienced less pain and took fewer pain medications during recovery when exposed to natural sunlight.
If you’re able to get outside in the sun and work in a garden, it may offer even greater healing effects, according to research published in the Scientific American.
Clare Cooper Marcus, an emeritus professor in landscape architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, told the publication, “Spending time interacting with nature in a well-designed garden won’t cure your cancer or heal a badly burned leg. But there is good evidence it can reduce your levels of pain and stress—and, by doing that, boost your immune system in ways that allow your own body and other treatments to help you heal.”
5. You’ll boost your vitamin D levels
There’s a reason vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin – that’s because when sunlight hits the skin, it starts what’s known as the circuitous process which leads to the biologically active form of the vitamin. Vitamin D plays an important role in our health, with its major function to help maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. It helps the body to absorb calcium, which forms and maintains strong bones.
This is a nutrient that can be challenging to get enough of strictly from foods, because so few naturally carry it, so most of us get between 80 to 90 percent of this vitamin from the rays of the sun, according to Dr. Michael F. Holick, M.D., Ph.D., professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics at the Boston University Medical Center who has studied and published on vitamin D for decades.
Holick says that even if you’re eating a healthy diet, there’s still a good chance you aren’t getting enough vitamin D. Without a sufficient amount of the vitamin, you may be missing out on protective benefits against everything from cancer and depression to heart attacks and strokes. But, the good news is that all you need to do to ensure your body is making its own vitamin D is to get outside in the sun for about 15 minutes at least a few days a week.
One caveat is that most sunscreens effectively block UVB light, which is the part of the spectrum that causes sunburn, but it’s also the type that triggers the generation of vitamin D in the skin. That means, you’ll need to get some limited time outdoors in the sun without sunscreen, like going for a short, 15-minute walk. You’ll still want to be diligent about liberally using sunscreen when you’re outside for an extended period of time, however,
6. You’ll be doing something good for your heart
Japanese scientists have been reporting on the health and stress-relieving benefits of forest bathing, or shinrin-yoku, for decades now. Researchers have found that the practice of going for a walk in the forest can lower blood pressure, pulse and heart rate variability as well as reduce stress hormone levels. These benefits all support good heart health.
Numerous studies have found that exercising in the forest as well as simply gazing at the trees has the ability to reduce blood pressure as well as the stress-related hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Just looking at pictures of trees has similar, though much less dramatic effects. And, because stress inhibits the immune system, the stress benefits of forests, and the resulting heart health benefits, are further magnified.
7. You’ll lower inflammation in your body
Inflammation plays a role in a wide range of health conditions, including things like arthritis and appendicitis – diseases with “itis” at the end which form the names of specific inflammatory conditions. There are many other health issues that can be triggered at least in part by inflammation too, like heart disease, autoimmune disorders, certain cancers, Alzheimer’s disease and even obesity.
While inflammation is a natural process the body uses to respond to threats like an injury such as a stubbed toe, and pathogens, like when you’re exposed to the flu, when it goes into overdrive, that’s when problems can occur.
Fortunately, spending time outdoors in nature can help keep that inflammation in check. Researchers from Zhejiang Hospital & Zhejiang Provincial Key Lab of Geriatrics in China found that when students spent time in the forest, they had lower levels of inflammation as compared to students who spent time in the city. In another study, elderly patients were sent on a week-long trip into the forest. When they returned, they showed reduced signs of inflammation as well as positive effects on hypertension.
Furthermore, while you’re out in the sun getting that daily dose of vitamin D, that also helps to reduce inflammation. That’s because when you’re injured or are fighting off a flu bug, the immune system responds with inflammation, as noted earlier. That’s the good type of inflammation that helps to heal a wound or battle an infection. Once it’s been successful, your fever goes away, or the wound heals. Vitamin D is an important part of that process as it tells the immune system to “turn off” the inflammatory response when the work is done.
8. You’ll experience renewed mental energy
You know that feeling. You’ve been hard at work, focusing on getting a project done and suddenly it seems like your brain just won’t do its job anymore. That’s called mental fatigue, and one of the best ways to get your mind going again is to get outside.
A study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology revealed that mental fatigue can be overcome, and mental energy renewed by spending time outdoors in nature, and even just by looking at pictures of nature – although, you’ve got to think that the effects would be greater by actually feeling those warm rays on your skin, breathing in fresh air and listening to the sounds of birds singing.
You probably don’t need researchers to tell you that standing in awe of nature’s glorious beauty, like marveling at a glistening lake or an idyllic beach at the edge of a cerulean sea, is a great way to get a mental boost, though experts have proven scientifically that it does.
9. You’ll have a better chance for a longer life
The health effects of being outdoors in “green space,” seem nearly endless. Dutch researchers found that a wide range of diseases tended to be less prevalent among those who live near green space, and other studies have directly associated spending time in the forest, as noted earlier, as contributing to better overall health. While researchers haven’t yet directly proved a link between easy access to the great outdoors and a longer, healthier life, the evidence such as reduced stress and better heart health would naturally boost longevity.

Beautifully fragrant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and edible, rose water is an extremely versatile item to have on hand.
Save dollars and ensure the purity of your product by making your own DIY rose water – a surprisingly simple process.
Benefits of Rose Water:
There are so many benefits to making your own rose water including:
Lower Stress and Blood Pressure
Stopping to smell the roses may be the best thing you can do for your stress levels and heart health: the scent of rose has been proven to reduce blood pressure and levels of cortisol, the stress hormone.
Improved Mood
Rose can also help relieve the symptoms of depression and anxiety. A study published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice found that postpartum women treated twice weekly with a rose/lavender aromatherapy oil experienced a significant decrease in postnatal depression scores, and a marked improvement in general anxiety disorder, when compared with the control group.
Antibacterial and Antioxidant Properties
Plenty of research exists to show that rose has wide spectrum antimicrobial activities. It also exhibits antioxidant properties.
Quell Skin Inflammation
In addition to its antibacterial properties, rose water is believed to reduce redness and inflammation, and to balance the skin’s pH, making it the perfect beauty treatment for those suffering from acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
What’s more, German researchers discovered that rose oil increases the skin’s permeability, allowing it to soak up more nutrients. Of course, this is only good news if you make your own beauty products full of natural ingredients.
A Restful Slumber
The soothing floral notes of rose have been shown in trials to promote a good night’s sleep.
When hospital patients were given rose aromatherapy for three subsequent nights, it was found that the scent significantly improved the sleep quality of participants when compared with the control group of patients.
Rose Water Recipes:
There are a few ways to make rose water at home:
Method One: Simmer Pot
This is the easiest and quickest way to make your own rose water, although it doesn’t have a very long shelf life. It’s ideal for culinary or beauty purposes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup fresh or 1/2 cup dried organic rose petals
- 5 cups water
Directions
- Add the petals and water to a saucepan, cover, and bring to a boil.
- Turn down the heat and simmer for 10 minutes, until the rose petals fade in color. Allow to cool completely.
- Pass the rose water through a cheesecloth or fine mesh sieve. Decant the pure liquid into a sterilized glass bottle, and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Method Two: Distillation
This clear-colored distillation is slightly more difficult to make, but it will last much longer than the simple simmering method.
Ingredients
- 3 cups fresh or 1.5 cups dried organic rose petals
- Water
- Ice
Directions
- Add a clean brick or large rock to the center of a large pot, and place a metal bowl on top of the brick.
- Add the rose petals to the pot, and add enough water to come to the top of the brick.
- Place the lid, upside-down, over the pot (so the steam can drip down the center of the lid and into the bowl). Some ice cubes placed on the lid will speed up this process.
- Bring the water to the boil, and allow to simmer for 30 minutes. Ensure you keep in as much steam as possible, as this is what you will be using as rose water.
- Allow to cool completely before decanting the water from the metal bowl into a sterilized glass bottle. Store in the refrigerator for up to six months.
Method Three: The ‘Cheat’ Method
There is a third method for making rose water, using rose essential oil. While this method is safe to use for external beauty treatments, it should not be ingested or used for culinary purposes.
Ingredients
- 12 drops of rose essential oil
- 1 cup distilled water
- 1 teaspoon vodka
Directions
- Mix the essential oil and the vodka together, before adding to a sterilized glass bottle with the water. Store in the refrigerator, shaking before each use.
Uses for Rose Water:
Now that you have made a batch of homemade rose water, why not put it to good use? Here are a variety of ways rose water can be used for health and beauty, or even in the kitchen!
1. Personalized Fragrance
Avoid the multitude of toxic skincare ingredients – including artificial fragrances – by making your own perfumed spray.
Simply pour rose water into a spray bottle and add drops of your favorite essential oils until you get the blend you like. Remember to shake the bottle each time before you spritz to distribute the oils.
2. Cooling Face Mist
Keep your homemade rose water nearby to cool and hydrate your skin during hot days. Its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties will prevent spots and quell redness.
You can also add ingredients like aloe vera, witch hazel, or vitamin E to further support and nourish your skin. This recipe, which contains omega fats and evening primrose oil, is also a great choice.
3. Gentle Toner
Because of its astringent qualities, rose water makes a great facial toner for oily and acne-prone skin. Simply add a tablespoon of rose water to a half cup of distilled water to soften and rejuvenate.
4. Easy Eye Make-Up Remover
Removing stubborn mascara and eyeliner can be a tough job, with many believing that natural products aren’t up to the task. This eye make-up remover contains just two ingredients yet it is sure to get rid of every last trace of mascara on your lashes.
Mix equal amounts of homemade rose water and jojoba oil, apply it to a cotton ball and use it to gently cleanse the eye area as normal.
5. Hair Rinse
Rose water’s natural antimicrobial properties mean it’s a great way to kill the fungus and bacteria which can result in dandruff and other scalp conditions. It is also believed to balance the pH and minimize the porosity of the strands.
Use a cup of rose water as a final rinse after washing to add luster and shine to your mane. You can also dilute your regular shampoo and conditioner with rose water for antiseptic properties and a delightful scent.
6. Linen Spray
Freshen up bed linen, clothing, and fabric furniture with a few spritzes of rose water. Add a few drops of rose or lavender oil for a more lasting scent and extra antibacterial action.
7. Sunburn Treatment
Conventional after-sun treatments can contain many of the same chemicals and pose some of the samedangers as conventional sunscreens.
This homemade sunburn spray – with rose water, aloe vera, apple cider vinegar, and essential oils – will provide relief while soothing and repairing your skin, rather than causing further damage to it!
8. Stress Relief
Reduce anxiety, depression, and stress, by spritzing some rose water on your pillow before bed at night, spraying some on your hair or clothing, or even adding it to your diffuser with a few drops of lavender oil. Your stress levels (and perhaps even blood pressure!) will soon fall.
9. Calming Bath Water
Adding a cup of rose water to you bath, along with a few rose petals, can instantly relieve the worries of the day. It will also soothe and nourish your skin, while setting you up for a restful night’s sleep.
10. Floral Mouthwash
Although the idea of rinsing with rose water doesn’t seem quite as refreshing as peppermint, it can be just as effective as using a conventional mouthwash, yet far less harsh on your teeth and gums. For extra antimicrobial powers, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil.
11. Eye Treatment
Just woken up with puffy, swollen eyes and need to get to work? The anti-inflammatory effects of rose water mean it’s the perfect treatment to have on hand for such an occasion.
Spritz or pour some chilled rose water onto cotton pads and place them on your eyes for five minutes to cool and soothe.
12. Soothing Body Scrub
Rejuvenate your skin, remove dead cells, and add fragrance with this fantastic scrub recipe – made with natural sea salt, almond oil, rose water, and vanilla.
13. Flavoring Food
Rose water adds a subtle floral hint to a variety of dishes, particularly anything dairy-based, fruit-based, or nut-based.
Try this flavor-filled Rice Pudding with Rose Water and Cardamom, a traditional Moroccan Carrot and Rose Water Salad; a creamy and fruity Yogurt Panna Cotta with Blueberries; or these delicious Pistachio Rose Water Cookies.
14. Adding Depth to Drinks
All manner of drinks will benefit from the addition of rose water – from teas and tonics to cocktails and coolers. This Persian Style Iced Tea is sure to cool and refresh on a summer’s day, as is a pitcher of Rose Water Lemonade. Smoothie lovers can elevate their game with a Fig and Rose Smoothie; while cocktail connoisseurs won’t want to miss out on a Lemon, Raspberry and Rose Vodka Cocktail or a Cucumber and Rose Gin.

The Code of Conduct Tribunal found former Minister of the Niger Delta, Godsday Orubebe guilty of false asset declaration.
Chairman of the Tribunal, Danladi Umar ruled in favour of the federal government in a one-count charge of false declaration of asset against the former minster, TheCable reports.
“The prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, and all evidence tendered are admitted,” Danladi said.
”I hereby seize, on behalf of the federal government, the property known as plot 2057,” he added.
Besides this, Orubebe still has a case before the Federal High Court in Abuja where the ICPC alleges he misappropriated two billion naira meant for the dualization of Section IV of the East West Road.

Billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote says he’s not interested in buying the nation’s assets. And he won’t dabble into it even if it was offered to him at no cost.
This is according to an interview he conducted with Thisday.
While Dangote is one of those advocating the sale of the national assets, he says he sees that as a way to boost the economy and stabilize the exchange rate.
“But the issue is, why did I suggest that we should sell some of the assets? I know the touchy one is the NLNG. I want to make it categorically clear that even if the government is selling NLNG on credit, I am not interested in buying.”
He says borrowing isn’t the best option for the nation at the moment. And that Nigeria needs about 15 billion dollars to jumpstart the economy.
On assets he’ll perfer to see sold, he says,
“I am talking about the sale of the marginal fields and all those non-producing and capped oil wells that we have not even touched in the last 50 years. They have not been touched at all. They are there, just dormant.”

Billionaire businessman, Aliko Dangote says he’s not interested in buying the nation’s assets. And he won’t dabble into it even if it was of...
Here’s a time when everyone has the answers – or so they believe.
On one side they call for the sale of national assets. The nation’s economic team, the Senate President and even billionaire businessman; Aliko Dangote think this is our only way out.
Some even suggest that, asides oil assets there are other government assets lying fallow- rotting away due to poor maintenance or neglect. They think that’s what should be sold. Take the poorly maintained national theater in Iganmu for instance. And there are more of such facilities in a poor state. Privatizing such will bring such facilities back to life thereby adding to the economy and also in the short term cash gotten in exchange can be injected into reviving the economy.
But there’s distrust for our leaders. The position of Nigerians is simple- won’t these assets be sold to the rich minority governing us? This fear is not unfounded. A similar process under Obasanjo was mismanaged.
“Many preferred bidders were said to have been replaced by those favoured by the former president and even those who never bidded for the companies”, Vanguard reports.
Another fear is, if the nation faces dire financial constraints in the near future how will it get out of it once these assets are already divested?
While the government hinted there will be buyback clause in the agreement. Nigerians are not hearing that.
And so the back and forth.
Organised labour said it will fight against sale of said assets, the Senate also kicked out the proposal. The people won.
But if the sale of assets is the best idea the FG has to upturn the nation’s circumstances – then we have a lose-lose situation in our hands.
So when former Anambra state Governor, Peter Obi gave a talk at The Platform, he cause quite a stir when he spoke on “Cutting the Cost of Governance”.
He refuted the sentiment that the nation needs to borrow money at this time as he says,
“Nigeria can still function on its income if only we learn how to cut cost.”
He went on to talk about practical steps he took to cut the cost of governance while he was governor. Cutting down the governors fleet, how his cook used to kill one cow a day in the government house before he stop it.
“We need to cut the cost of governance. No governor needs a house in Abuja; governors don’t live in Abuja.” Another of such steps he took.
At the end of it all, the former governor said he left over 150million naira in the state treasury without taxing his people as much as Lagos does.
Recurrent expenditure in the 2016 Federal budget is 70%. And that has been the trend, 74.4 per cent in 2011, to 71.5 % in 2012, and further to 67.5% in 2013, but rose back to 74% in 2014.
A report by Afenifere Renewal Group says “For three years in a row 2011 to 2013 recurrent expenditure performed 100 per cent while capital expenditure never hit 60 per cent, except in 2011 where it recorded 80 per cent performance.”
And it makes a clear point that “An average of 70 to 30 for the recurrent and capital expenditures portends danger for a stagnating society limited by infrastructure capacities”.
For instance out on the 115 billion naira allocated to the National Assembly 105.4 billion naira is for recurrent expenditure whileN9.6 billion is for capital projects.
Out of which the Senate purchased “36 / 108 utility Land Cruisers at the cost of N36.5 million each,” Vanguard reports.
But Daily Trust reports this is twice the actual price of these vehicles.
But that’s just a casual look into the Senate’s affairs. How about the low chamber- budget padding?
And this is just one arm of government.
At the end, Obi says even with the current economic state “this country today can spend and save” if those in power chose to be responsible with their expenses. And the people “stop celebrating criminality”.
But what happens to these funds once they are available?
What should the overall state strategy be going forward?
The former governor doesn’t speak on this. The Buhari administration also doesn’t have a clear approach, even if it does- Nigerians are not sold on it.
Indeed we need to cut the cost of governance. And beyond that, we need a clear framework for our economy.
Here’s a time when everyone has the answers – or so they believe. On one side they call for the sale of national assets. The nation’s econo...
The Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria( MOPPAN) expelled Rahama Sadau for “immoral appearance” in a music video.
This is according to a statement signed by the group’s secretary, Salisu Mohammed. PremiumTimes reports.
MOPPAN is the governing body of the Hausa indigenous film industry, Kannywood.
“The leadership of the industry has taken this decision for her violation of its codes of ethics known to all it practitioners,” it reads.
The group also sees it’d action as “a deterrent to the actors and actresses to check their public behaviour as they are expected to be good ambassadors to the society they really”.
Rahama played the love interest of a rapper, Classiq in said video; in which they held hands and cuddled.
Classiq went on Twitter to seek public opinion on Rahama’s expulsion.

Senator Dino Melaye says President Buhari should pardon repentant treasury looters.
This is according to a statement he released, Vanguard reports.
“Though an unrepentant advocate for integrity and forthrightness especially from public office holders, I however sincerely want to recommend that Mr. President grant Presidential Amnesty/Pardon to all those who looted our treasury provided they return all proceeds of their loot to the government within six (6) months of the declaration of the Amnesty.”
This action, he says, will “encourage the voluntary return of the the looted funds, empower the government financially to immediately commence the implementation of projects and programmes that will stimulate the economy”. He also added that this will save the judiciary and law enforcement agencies the trouble of running after said looters.
Those who don’t comply within the six month window should “face the reality of aggressive and expeditious prosecution and eventual jail terms for convicts in accordance with the laws of the land” he says.
