Forbes has once again released the billionaires list. The list for the year 2017 has many surprises, with many people dropping, while others have risen in the ranks.

Below is the list of the 12 wealthiest women in the world as at March 2017 according to Forbes:

1. Liliane Bettencourt (#14 on Forbes)

Liliane Bettencourt suffers from dementia

The world’s richest woman, Bettencourt owns 33% of makeup giant L’Oréal with her children. Her father, Eugene Schueller, founded the cosmetics empire in 1907.

In 2011 she opened the Crystal Bridges museum in the family’s hometown of Bentonville, Arkansas. Crystal Bridges features works from the likes of Andy Warhol, Norman Rockwell and Mark Rothko.

Her personal art collection is valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

3. Jacqueline Mars (#26 on Forbes)

Jacqueline Mars owns a third of the world’s largest candymaker, Mars Inc., the company her grandfather started in his kitchen in 1911.

Mars owns five billion-dollar pet brands, including Iams and Whiskas, and in January 2017 agreed to pay $7.7 billion for VCA Inc., an operator of nearly 800 animal hospitals and 137 pet day care centers.

Jacqueline joined the family business in 1982, where she oversaw the development and marketing of new food products. She retired in 2001 but remained on the board until 2016.

4. Maria Franca Fissolo (#29 on Forbes)

Maria Franca Fissolo is the widow of Michele Ferrero, who built Ferrero Group into one of the world’s leading sweets companies, best known for its iconic Nutella chocolate hazelnut spread, Kinder chocolates and Tic-Tac mints.

Ferrero died in February 2015, but the family business lives on. Her son Giovanni, who took over as co-CEO in 1987, continues to lead the company and has reiterated plans to keep it in family hands.

5. Susanne Klatten (#38 on Forbes)

7. Gina Rinehart (#69 on Forbes)

Gina Rinehart is Australia’s richest citizen but her wealth is built on iron ore and her fortune can either jump or plummet depending on the price of the commodity.

The daughter of a high-profile iron-ore explorer, Lang Hancock, Rinehart took her late father’s bankrupted estate and rebuilt it into something much larger.

8. Abigail Johnson (#75 on Forbes)

Abigail Johnson is CEO of Fidelity Investments

Her grandfather Edward Johnson II founded mutual fund giant Fidelity Investments in 1946. She worked summers at Fidelity through college and joined full-time as an analyst in 1988 after receiving a Harvard M.B.A.

She took over as CEO in 2014 and chairman in 2016 and owns an estimated 24% stake of the firm, which has $2.1 trillion in managed assets.

9. Iris Fontbona (#84 on Forbes)

Iris Fontbona is the widow of Andrónico Luksic, who built a fortune in mining and beverages before dying of cancer in 2005.

He left his businesses to Fontbona and their three sons: Jean-Paul, Andronico and Guillermo (who died of lung cancer in 2013 of at age 57).

Fontbona and her children control Antofagasta Plc, which trades on the London Stock Exchange and owns copper mines in Chile.

Fontbona and her children also own a majority stake in Quiñenco, a publicly-traded Chilean conglomerate active in banking, beer, manufacturing, energy, transportation and port services.

Their other assets include two chains of hotels in Croatia, Adriatic Luxury Resorts and Laguna Porec.

10. Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken (#95 on Forbes)

De Carvalho-Heineken is one of the world’s richest women thanks to her 23% controlling stake in Heineken.

Now an executive director, she inherited the stake in 2002 from her late father, longtime CEO Freddy Heineken.

11. Blair Parry-Okeden (#105 on Forbes)

Blair Parry Okeden is the granddaughter of James Cox

Blair Parry-Okeden is the granddaughter of James M. Cox, who founded what has become Cox Enterprises, an automotive and media conglomerate.

James, failed Democratic presidential candidate in 1920 and started the company. Parry-Okeden’s stepfather ran it for a time, and now her brother, Jim, a billionaire in his own right, manages the massive firm.

12. Massimiliana Landini Aleotti (#133 on Forbes)

Massimiliana Landini Aleotti is connected to Italy’s leading drug companies

Massimiliana Landini Aleotti and her three children inherited medical giant Menarini from her late husband, Alberto Aleotti, who passed away in May 2014 at age 91.

Alberto built Menarini into one of Italy’s leading drug companies, with 14 manufacturing sites around the world and more than 16,000 employees.

Punch reports that documents it obtained through painstaking and thorough investigations showed that the embattled senator has a Bachelor of Arts certificate in Geography from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna state.

The senator, apart from bagging a third class, also possesses a diploma certificate from the University of Jos.

However, the senator only has a statement of results from ABU. And not only that, checks at the university revealed that it only offers B.Sc. Geography and not B.A. Geography as reflected on Melaye’s statement of results.

NAIJ.com reported that Melaye’s trouble began on Monday, March 20, 2017 when an online news medium, Sahara Reporters, in a tweet alleged that the senator did not graduate from ABU for his first degree, against his claim that he studied Geography in the prestigious institution.

The news medium also alleged that Melaye, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Capital Territory, bribed his Head of Department, who assisted him to forge his transcript.

In a series of tweets via its Twitter handle, SaharaReporters, the online news medium said some lecturers in the Geography Department insisted that Melaye did not graduate from the department and that his name was not on the graduation list because he failed five compulsory courses.

Following the report, which gained traction speedily, Melaye dismissed the allegations, daring the news medium to sue him if it had authentic evidence to back its claims.

He took to his twitter handle and wrote,“SaharaReporters, please sue me and ABU if it is true that I did not graduate from Zaria. Tell Magu (EFCC Chairman) to arrest and prosecute me.”

Melaye also boasted that he was currently a student in ABU pursuing his seventh degree, adding, “Go round all the UNIS (universities) I attended in digging more.”

A day after the news broke, Melaye, while speaking on the floor of the Senate, also addressed himself as an “authentic graduate” of ABU.

Meanwhile, Punch said that when it contacted ABU to verify the conflicting information, the institution’s Information Officer, Adamu Mohammed, promised that the institution would come out with its position on Wednesday March 22, which it failed to do as of the time of filing this report.

Cholesterol, a fatty substance made by the liver and distributed throughout the body, is essential for the body to function properly. Cholesterol allows the body to make vitamin D and hormones, and makes up bile acids.
Too much of it, however, or high cholesterol means there is more in the blood than the body needs. When this happens, it becomes harmful to the body, particularly the heart, according to health experts.
On the relationship between high cholesterol and heart diseases, Dr Fidel Okite, a medical practitioner explained: “Lipoproteins are what moves cholesterol through the bloodstream- we have the LDL (low density lipoproteins) that transport cholesterol around to where it’s needed and the HDL or high density lipoproteins, known as “good cholesterol.” If there’s too much cholesterol, (the LDL variety), it may be deposited into the arteries causing plaques which can narrow the coronary arteries. As these narrow, it’s harder for blood to make it through to the heart. If an area of plaque breaks open, it can result in a blood clot, which can block blood flow altogether. This puts you at great risk of having a heart attack.”
Speaking further, he added: “Strokes can also occur due to plaque buildup in the arteries which carry blood to the brain. When the brain is deprived of oxygen, brain cells quickly become damaged and start to die resulting in strokes. A stroke can cause brain damage, disability or death.”
For those prone to high cholesterol, a nutritionist, Chioma Frederick recommends a diet rich in foods that will reduce the amount of LDL in the body. “You will need to adjust your diet if you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol in your bloodstream because of the health implication. It can cause heart attacks or strokes.

Heart Foods
Frederick advises those with high cholesterol to go for foods rich in fiber, polyunsaturated fats, which directly lower LDL and those that contain plant sterols and stanols. “If you have been diagnosed with high cholesterol and you wish to bring it down, you should eat high fibre foods and cut down on saturated fats. Beans are highly recommended, as they are rich in soluble fiber. They also take a while for the body to digest, thereby making you feel full for longer after a meal. Eggplant or garden egg and okra are also good sources of soluble fibre. These are readily available in our local markets and can be prepared in a variety of delicious dishes.”
To her, certain foods that contain saturated fat and trans fat such as red meat, whole-fat dairy products, margarine and eggs, should be avoided by those with high cholesterol. “These saturated fat-rich foods are the major contributors of LDL in the bloodstream. So, they should be avoided or taken in very little quantity. The same applies to some oils like vegetable oils such as palm oil, coconut oil, and cocoa butter. Instead, go for olive oil, sunflower oil, canola oil, corn oil and mustard oil,” she stated.
Sweet potatoes, walnut, almonds, red wine, salmon, tuna, fruits such as oranges, grapefruits and watermelon, oatmeal, flaxseed, low fat yoghurt, cherries among others, are also good.
“Instead of red meat, opt for oily fish such as tuna and salmon. Salmon is heart-friendly as it is rich in omega-3. Omega-3 are healthy fats that can stop heart rhythm disorders as well as lower blood pressure,” she said.
Nuts are rich in fibre, plant sterols and heart healthy fats and are good for the heart, she added.A small handful of walnuts a day, said Frederick, may lower your cholesterol. “It may also protect against inflammation in the heart’s arteries. Walnuts are packed with omega-3s, healthy fats called monounsaturated fats and fiber. The benefits come when walnuts replace bad fats, like those in chips and pastries.”
Almonds may also help lower “bad” LDL cholesterol so they should be taken regularly as well for a healthy heart.

If you want to make some changes in your food intake, it’s a good idea to talk to your health care provider (HCP). You may also want to ask your HCP for a referral to see a dietitian (a person who has studied nutrition and knows about healthy eating). Learning about nutrition can help you make healthier choices, but it’s important to think of food as just one important part of your life.

Aim for regular meals (usually 3 meals per day; one in the morning, afternoon, and evening) and healthy snacks (when you are hungry or need extra energy)
Eat foods from all of the food groups (carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables, proteins, and dairy) each day to meet your nutritional needs
Balance nutrient-rich foods with small amounts of other foods, such as sweets or fast foods
Eat when hungry and stop when full

Tips for Healthy Eating

1. Don’t skip meals – plan meals and snacks ahead of time.

Believe it or not, eating 3 meals with healthy snacks in between is the best way to maintain your energy and a healthy weight. You are more likely to choose foods that are not as healthy when you skip meals and become overly hungry.
Eat breakfast. Skipping breakfast can lead to over-eating later in the day.
Eating away from home? Don’t leave yourself stranded—take foods with you or know where you can go to buy something healthy and satisfying.

2. Learn about simple, healthy ways to prepare foods.

Try healthier ways to cook foods such as grilling, stir-frying, microwaving, baking, and boiling instead of deep frying.
Try fresh or dried herbs (basil, oregano, parsley) and spices (lemon pepper, chili powder, garlic powder) to flavor your food instead of adding less healthy toppings such as butter, sour cream, or gravy.
Trim the skin and fat off of your meat—you’ll still get plenty of flavors and it’s more nutritious.

3. Sugar – avoid getting too much.

Sugary drinks are a big source of empty energy. This means that they contain a lot of energy (in the form of calories) that your body may not need, and they don’t contain a lot of nutrients (vitamins, minerals, or fiber).
Try diet sodas, sugar-free drink mixes, water, and seltzer water instead of regular soda or juice. Even “natural” unsweetened juices contain a lot of energy you may not need. Don’t go overboard—if you are going to drink regular soda or juice, try to limit the amount you drink to 4-8 ounces, one time per day.
Lots of sugar is also found in foods such as cakes, cookies, and candies. Whole grain or wheat desserts may contain less sugar. It’s okay to enjoy these foods once in a while as long as they don’t replace healthier foods.

4. Solid fat – avoid getting too much

Foods with solid fats such as butter, cream, hydrogenated oils, or partially hydrogenated oils contain saturated and possibly trans fats. This can be a big source of empty energy, without many nutrients. Try lean proteins such as beans, fish, and poultry, or heart healthy oils such as olive or canola oil instead.
As with sugar, solid fats can be found in desserts too. Choosing desserts made with fruit purees or olive oil instead of butter and cream can be healthier options; however, it is okay to enjoy these foods once in a while, as long as they don’t replace healthier foods.
Creamy sauces and dressings such as alfredo or ranch are often high in saturated fat and the serving size is likely less than you would expect. With sauces like this a little goes a long way.

5. Be mindful when eating

Slow down when you eat. Try to relax and pace yourself so that your meals last at least 20 minutes, since it takes around 20 minutes for you to feel full.
Listen to your body. Eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full will help your body balance its energy needs and stay comfortable.
Ask yourself: Am I eating because I’m hungry? Or am I stressed, angry, sad, or bored?
Try naturally fiber rich foods, such as whole grains, vegetables, and fruits so you feel comfortably full.

6. Avoid “diet thinking.”

There are no good foods or bad foods. All foods can be part of healthy eating, when eaten in moderation.
You do not need to buy low carb, gluten-free, fat-free, or diet foods (unless told specifically by your medical provider to do so). These foods are not necessarily lower in calories—they usually have lots of other added ingredients to replace the carbs or fat.
YOU are more important than your weight or body size—believe it! Your health and happiness can be hurt by drastic weight loss plans. If you have not yet reached your adult height, rapid weight loss could interfere with your growth. Instead of trying extreme approaches, focus on making small lifestyle changes that you can stick with for life.
