When it’s time for a workout, you need to have enough energy available to burn, but equally, a large meal before a workout will just make you feel uncomfortable. What you eat, though, before a workout is important. What you eat, when you eat it, and how much you eat, all play a role in how much energy you have during your workout and how well your body will recover. It is best to eat around forty five minutes before a workout and longer for heavier meals. For the best results from your workouts, check out our top 12 pre-workout foods, snacks and drinks:
1. A cup of coffee before workout
You might be surprised by our inclusion of coffee on our list, but research has found that caffeine can make you enjoy your workout more. Caffeinated fizzy drinks are not so good though, as the gas will make you uncomfortable during your exercise, but a cup of black coffee (without added cream or sugar) will enhance your energy levels and can reduce after workout soreness in your muscles.
2. Just Oatmeal
Ideal fuel for the morning workout, a small serving of oatmeal will settle fairly quickly in your stomach; thanks to a high fiber content, the oatmeal will provide you with long lasting slow release carbohydrates, and also, oats contain vitamins of B group, which will help convert carbs into energy.
3. Banana
Bananas are top on the health experts list of pre-workout snacks. They are a great and convenient source of carbohydrates and they also contain potassium, which can help to prevent muscle cramps.
4. Avocado
If you do have a bit of time for food preparation before your workout, slice an avocado and sprinkle with some lemon juice for a tasty snack. The avocado contains a host of healthy fats, which will provide you with a long lasting fuel for your work out session.
5. Pre-workout hydration
Drinking water before a workout is just as important, as the water that you drink during and after exercise. Ideally, you should be drinking around 18 ounces of water in the two hours prior to starting your workout.
6. Orange juice and oatmeal
Orange juice is rich in vitamin C and unprocessed oatmeal will keep your energy levels consistent during a workout and will clean your arteries. When you consume these two foods together, you also stabilize your LDL cholesterol.
7. Healthy fruit smoothie
Fruit smoothies will give you a good energy boost, as carbs from fruits break down fairly rapidly and are quickly digested. Try blending one banana, a cup of strawberries and half cup of blueberries (add some water if you need) and enjoy your wonderful pre-workout, antioxidant rich fruit smoothie.
8. Last minute top ups
If you haven’t eaten for some time and you’re just about to start on a workout, then you will need a quick energy boost. Best to keep it light and eat only a small amount, but, even a handful of dry fruits, an apple or a slice of wholegrain bread will give you some much needed carbohydrates.
9. Greek yoghurt
Easy on the stomach and filled with the protein and calcium you will need, Greek yoghurt makes a great pre-workout snack. For an extra energy boost, you can add some honey to it.
10. Berries mix: blueberries, strawberries & raspberries
By eating this beautiful mixture of berries you will give your body a boost of antioxidants. Not only this delicious treat looks and tastes fabulous, but also the mixture of fresh berries will provide your body with nutrients, vitamins, energy and volumes of health benefits.
11. Lean protein with veggies
Two to three hours before a workout, you can eat a combination of lean protein with green vegetables. This food combination will provide you with healthy nutrients your body needs, so that you’ll have plenty of energy to do your exercise.
12. A liquid alternative – Fresh orange juice
Even if you really don’t feel like eating anything, you will need some carbohydrates to burn. Just one glass of orange juice will give you a sensible amount of carbohydrates, enough to get the energy levels up in time for your workout.
Actually, you may not need a pre-workout snack. For many of us, fueling our workouts is very important, but, if you are very fit and are following a healthy diet, you may not need to eat specifically for your workout. If eating before a workout makes you feel unwell, best not to eat and workout, than not work out at all!

President Muhammadu Buhari has spoken on the challenges faced by his administration’s war against corruption, maintaining that it was not a one-day job, but a work in progress.
NAIJ.com learnt that the president admitted that not everything was being got right, but noted that the administration was making progress.
“We shall get to where we are headed. Yes, we are succeeding in the anti-corruption war, cases are being investigated and those indicted are being prosecuted.
“The number of convictions is not within the ambit of the executive. Ours is to investigate and charge to court. It is the duty of the judiciary to convict. We can’t be prosecutor and jury at the same time,” the president told his interviewers: Reginald Ibe, the publisher and Fola Arogundade, editor-in-chief.

Lipstick is most girls’ favourite cosmetic product and nearly every lady owns several different shades, but have you ever considered what is actually in lipstick? You would check the ingredients on food packaging and you would never buy food that contains poisons, dead insects, and more artificial preservatives than you could list on the side of a lipstick tube, but that is exactly what you will find in some lipsticks. The ingredients of lipstick are easily absorbed into the body through the lips and, according to some statistics, the average woman will ingest five pounds of lipstick into their body every year. So, let’s take a look at some lipstick ingredients that could be found in the lip product that you are wearing today.
1. It’s not all bad news!
We all love our lipstick and we don’t want you to go and throw all your lipsticks straight in the garbage! Most of what lipstick contains is perfectly harmless and the main ingredient of most lipsticks is nothing more offensive than castor oil, beeswax and other waxes, which usually account for about 90% of the ingredients. Some of the other ingredients however, are toxic, so you might want to consider going easy on the lipstick when you’ve read more about what might be in it.
2. Squished bugs
The pigment that is used in red lipsticks is usually made from crushed bugs; the cochineal bug, to be more precise. Cochineal bugs, which live on cacti, are boiled in a sodium carbonate solution or boiled in ammonia, which brings out the red in them. They are then dried into a powder and added to your lipstick.
3. Fish scales
Lipsticks that have a shimmer, often get that shimmer from such lipstick ingredients as the scales of fish. You’d have thought by now that science would have come up with synthetic alternatives to fish scales and crushed bugs, but scientists have yet to find a cost effective way to recreate the deep red of a cochineal bug and the delicate shimmer of a fish scale.
4. Lead
Even though the use of lead in lipsticks was banned many years ago, there is still lead to be found in many lipsticks. Lead is known to stay in the body once consumed and it can lead to neurological problems. The lead isn’t added to lipstick deliberately, it comes with other ingredients that are used. It is still a concern, though, because in one study conducted in 2009, every single lipstick that was tested did contain traces of lead.
5. Chilli powder
Another one of commonly used lipstick ingredients is chill powder. Lip plumping lipsticks often contain capsaicin, which is the compound found in chillies and hot peppers that creates the hot, burning sensation when you eat them. Capsaicin is not dangerous, but it acts as a mild skin irritant and it makes your skin swell, which is what creates the plumper lips.
6. Methylparaben
Methylparaben is a preservative that has been banned for use in cosmetics in many European countries, but is still present in lipstick ingredients in some other countries. Methylparaben can be absorbed by the skin very easily and it has been linked with cancer and it may also be disruptive to the endocrine system.
7. Propylparaben
Propylparaben, which is a member of the paraben family of preservatives, is often used in lipsticks and other cosmetics. Parabens are thought to be able to disrupt the hormonal system and Propylparaben, in particular, can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions.
8. Tocopherol Acetate
Tocopherol Acetate is used in cosmetics as an alternative to natural Vitamin E, because it is cheaper and it lasts for longer. Tocopherol Acetate is rated as only a moderate hazard, but it has been known to cause irritation to the skin and, in some cases, blistering.
9. Retinyl Palmitate
Retinyl Palmitate is another one of synthesised lipstick ingredients that is used as a replacement for Vitamin A. Although this is one is also only rated as being moderately hazardous, some medical experts believe that it may cause cancer and sterility in women.
10. Should we stop wearing lipstick?
If you were to look closely enough you could find traces of dangerous chemicals in just about anything and like all thing things in life, moderation is the key. Unless you intend to start eating your lipstick for lunch, then the levels of the dangerous chemicals in most lipsticks are too low to be of any real concern. If you are concerned about what is really in your lipstick, though, you can buy organic or ‘clean’ lipsticks that do not use any of these potentially harmful chemicals.
Stay beautiful and healthy!

Spinach is an edible flowering plant native to central and western Asia; it is an amazing, nutrient rich vegetable that can supply you with a whole range of vitamins and minerals in concentrations far higher than you would find in many other vegetables. While it won’t give you instant muscles in the way that it did for Popeye in the cartoons, it will supply you with iron, niacin, zinc, protein, folate, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, copper, calcium and vitamins A, B6, C, E and K. You can eat spinach in salads, you can make green smoothies with it, and you can eat it as a vegetable, so there are more than enough ways that you can add spinach to your diet. If you do eat more of this vibrant-looking, green plant, here are ten of the amazing health benefits of spinach that you will gain.
1. It boosts your muscles
The Popeye cartoons weren’t totally wrong about spinach, because it does provide a boost to your muscles. In a study that was published in a journal called Cell Metabolism, researchers found that some of the nitrates in spinach boost the energy to such a degree that muscles needed less oxygen to power the muscles.
2. It reduces inflammation
Another one of fabulous health benefits of spinach is that it contains some powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients, including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and other flavonoids and carotenoids that fight inflammation in the body. This can help to protect you against cancer and it can also ease the pain of conditions, such as arthritis.
3. It protects your eyes
Next one of great health benefits of spinach is that it protects your eyes. Spinach contains powerful phytochemicals, one of which is called lutein, which helps to protect the eyes from age related macular degeneration. It is also a good source of beta-carotene that is known to play a very important role in protecting against the development of cataracts in the eyes.
4. It slows the ageing of your skin
Health benefits of spinach also include anti-ageing. The Vitamin A that is found in spinach is used by the body to maintain the moisture levels in your skin. This helps to keep your skin healthy, it combats skin conditions, such as acne and psoriasis, and it also helps to prevent wrinkles forming by keeping the skin elastic and soft.
5. It is good for your heart
Research has suggested that eating spinach can help to protect you against heart disease and other cardiovascular problems too. Spinach contains antioxidants, which fight the damage that can be caused by free radicals, and it also contains folic acid, as well as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are also good for the heart. The combination of these ingredients works to keep the blood flowing freely and avoid the build-up of cholesterol in the arteries.
6. It helps prevent cancer
Another one of fabulous health benefits of spinach is that it contains many of the ingredients that are nature’s own way of protecting us against cancer, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, carotenoids and antioxidants. It also contains a flavonoid, called kaempferol. In a study, which was published in the Journal of Cancer, researchers suggested that a diet that was rich in kaempferol could decrease the risk of developing ovarian cancer by as much as 40%.
7. It is a great source of iron
Spinach is packed full of iron, which is a vital component of the haemoglobin in the blood that carries the oxygen around your body. A lack of iron in the diet can cause fatigue and affect the proper functioning of many parts of the body, including the brain and the immune system. We also need iron to maintain the health of cells in the body and, a lack of iron, or anaemia, can also affect the health of the hair, skin and nails.
8. It helps to detox the body
Body detox is another one of impressive health benefits of spinach. The chlorophyll in spinach, which is what gives spinach leaves their dark green colour, helps your colon and your liver remove toxins from your body and it also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. A green smoothie a day, made with spinach, will help flush out all the unnatural toxins from your body that you get from pollution in the air and from additives and pesticides that are in our food.
9. It keeps your mind sharp
Numerous studies have also proven that a diet that is high in green leafy vegetables, like spinach, can also keep the brain healthy and it may slow the decline in brain functions as we get older. This could help to combat diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. This is believed to be another important role that antioxidants, like those found in spinach, have to play in protecting our bodies from disease.
10. It helps to control blood sugar levels
People who suffer from diabetes also can enjoy fabulous health benefits of spinach, because of its very low glycaemic index. Spinach is also very high in fibre, so it helps to stabilise the blood sugar levels in the body and it improves the blood flow.
Now, here is an amazingly delicious green smoothie recipe with fresh spinach :
250 gr of fresh spinach
2 frozen bananas
2 cups of watermelon sliced (or 1,5 cups of water if you don’t have watermelon at hand)
1 tablespoon of honey (or 4 dates)
Blend well all the ingredients and enjoy tasty and vitamin-rich green smoothie!
