The minister of health, Isaac Adewole, has revealed that the death toll of those affected by the meningitis outbreak has risen to 489.
Premium Times reports that the minister also said 4,637 cases of cerebrospinal meningitis were recorded across the country by Monday.
The minister gave this number during an emergency meeting of northern state governors and traditional rulers on Tuesday, April 11 convened by the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III.
He said with Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, Niger and Kebbi states most affected as 171 were confirmed to be the Type C meningitis.
The minister said the federal government would need about $1 billion to procure vaccine to deal with the outbreak in the most affected areas.
“Federal needed $1,087 billion to procure vaccines and administer on some 21 million persons against the meningitis in the affected states,”
He said the federal government has tackled the outbreak in 26 states so far in collaboration with state government and the international community.
Adewole also charged traditional rulers to be more proactive especially in sensitising people about hygiene and the new to stop overcrowding.
He also called on them to tackle corruption which might be a problem.
“You must stop corruption, when funds are released, utilise the funds properly by tracking and proper monitoring.”

The FBI obtained a FISA warrant last summer to monitor the communications of Carter Page, who was an early foreign-policy adviser to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
The energy-consultant-turned-foreign-policy adviser was named in an unverified dossier about President Donald Trump’s ties to Russia as a liaison between the Trump campaign and Russian officials. His trips to Moscow and contact with at least one Russian official last year are now reportedly under FBI investigation .
The dossier alleged that Igor Sechin , the CEO of Russia’s state oil company, offered Page and his associates the brokerage of a 19% stake in the company in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions on Russia. The dossier says the offer was made in July, when Page was in Moscow giving a speech at the Higher Economic School.
Page has called accusations that he served as a liaison an “illegal” form of “retribution” for the speech, in which he slammed the US for its “hypocritical focus on ideas such as democratization, inequality, corruption, and regime change.”
Page told Business Insider that he “was so happy to hear that further confirmation [of surveillance] is now being revealed. It shows how low the Clinton/Obama regime went to destroy our democracy and suppress dissidents who did not fully support their failed foreign policy.”
Law-enforcement and intelligence agencies wishing to monitor signal intelligence they deem relevant to an investigation – in this case, suspected Russian interference in the 2016 election – must obtain what is known as a FISA warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.
Page told BI that he believes the FISA requests were “unjustified.” But the
government’s application for the FISA warrant targeting Page, The Post reported, has been renewed more than once, and “included a lengthy declaration that laid out investigators’ basis for believing that Page was an agent of the Russian government and knowingly engaged in clandestine intelligence activities on behalf of Moscow.”
There were contacts Page had with Russian intelligence officials that he did not disclose, according to The Post, and unanswered questions about a court case involving a Russian spy who tried to recruit him in 2013.
BuzzFeed News obtained the court filing for the case, which included a transcript of a conversation between Victor Podobnyy, the person accused of spying, and Igor Sporyshev, another Russian operative, about trying to recruit someone identified as “Male-1.”
Page confirmed to BuzzFeed that he was “Male-1.” But he said in a statement later that his personal identity was made “easily identifiable” in the court documents because the US government wanted to punish him for his “public positions of dissent.”
Page found himself at the center of a Russia-related firestorm in late February after USA Today reported that he met Russia’s ambassador to the US, Sergey Kislyak, during an event at the Republican National Convention. At least two other Trump associates, former adviser J.D. Gordon and then-Sen. Jeff Sessions, now the US attorney general, also spoke with Kislyak at the convention.
The White House has distanced itself from Page, insisting that he was an “informal” adviser to the campaign who left in early September. Page had no badge, an administration official told Business Insider last month, and never signed a non-disclosure agreement – two requirements of anyone working with the campaign in an official capacity. He also wasn’t on the campaign’s payroll, the official said, and did not have a campaign email account.
The Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russia’s interference in the 2016 election, has asked Page to preserve all information related to contacts with Russians during the campaign. He volunteered to be interviewed by the committee last month.

The Executive Governor of Plateau Sate, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong has congratulated Mr Michael Ejegba popularly known as ‘Efe’ on his emergence as the Winner of the Big Brother Naija (BBN) TV Reality Show.
According to the Governor, the victory of Efe is a further prove of the brotherhood, excellence, courage and determination that characterises the Plateau Spirit. It will be recalled that the Executive Governor had on Friday the 7th April, 2017 called on all Plateau Citizens to stand in solidarity with Efe by voting and mobilizing others to vote for the home grown Actor, who was at the verge of joining the team of successful Plateau Citizens who have won the TV Reality event in the past.
The Executive Governor is also using the opportunity of the Victory of Efe to call on all citizens of Plateau State, to ensure that the value they place on the common humanity of her citizens in a multi cultural and cosmopolitan setting, is always seen in the unity of purpose exhibited by all in the collective pursuit of a common goal. The Governor added that though Efe is by ethnic extraction from Delta State, Plateau is proud to lay claim to his entire life’s orientation having been groomed for excellence in life with the values that distinguish the Plateau person.

A tip off from a whistle blower today led operatives of EFCC to intercept huge sums of money in various currencies at the popular Balogun market in Lagos.
The monies include €547,730 and £21,090 as well as N5,648,500. The total haul is about N250m at the prevailing exchange rate at the parallel market.
The intercept followed information that about N250m cash was being moved somewhere in the market for conversion into foreign currencies by unnamed persons.
Operatives responded timely, met the money in Bureau de Change office, but a large chunk of it had been converted into Euro and Pounds sterling.
The BDC operators found in possession of the monies claimed they were acting on behalf of their boss who sent the money to them from one of the Northern states in Nigeria.
Two persons apprehended in the course of the raid are helping the Commission in its investigation.

The Federal Government has expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Governments and people of Egypt and Russia over terrorist attacks in the two countries.
A statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Dr. Clement Aduku on Monday in Abuja condemned the attacks.
Nigerian government expressed concern on the reports of the terrorist attacks on two Coptic Churches in the towns of Tanta and Alexandria, Egypt, on Sunday, April 9, leaving over 44 people dead .
The government according to the statement also expressed shock on the reports of terrorist bombing of a St. Petersburg train on Monday, April 3 that killed 14 people while many others were wounded .
According to the statement, Egypt had in the recent times experienced terrorist attacks, and that Nigeria condemned such callous and cowardly acts against innocent people.
“In this regard, the Nigerian people stand in solidarity with our Egyptian brothers and sisters to denounce these terrorists who seek to destroy our common human values and civilization. We therefore share in your grief.
Nigeria also stands in total solidarity with the Government and people of Russia at this tragic moment and offer our full cooperation.
The Nigerian government will work closely with the Russian Federation at all international fora to stamp out terrorism globally,” it states.

Governor Robert Bentley resigned on Monday after pleading guilty to two campaign misdemeanors amid allegations that he misused public resources to pursue an affair with a former aide. He was also accused of intimidating officials in an attempt to cover it up.
Public allegations of an affair between Bentley and former senior political adviser Rebekah Caldwell Mason did not break out until March 2016, according to reports. Bentley was booked into the Montgomery County Jail and released later.
As part of a plea deal, Bentley agreed to perform 100 hours of community service and repay his campaign fund $8,912. He also forfeited the $36, 000 in the campaign account. In turn, the state Attorney-General’s office will not pursue felonies against him.
He apologized to the citizens of the state. Speculation about the governor’s inappropriate behavior began in August 2015, when Bentley’s wife of 50 years, Dianne, abruptly filed for divorce, stating in court records that their marriage had suffered an “irretrievable breakdown”.
Speculations became rife after Bentley fired the state’s top law enforcement official, Spencer Collier, saying that an internal investigation at the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency uncovered possible wrongdoing.
Within hours, Collier spoke out against the governor, alleging that he had seen and investigated sexual text messages and audio recordings between Bentley and Mason.
“When I stand behind you, and I put my arms around you, and I put my hands on your breasts and just pull you real close. I love that too,” Bentley said in one audio recording.
“If we’re going to do what we did the other day, we’re going to have to start locking the door,” he was also heard saying. At one point, he mistakenly sent a text message saying, “I love you Rebekah”, to his then-wife, Dianne.
Dianne also secretly recorded her husband speaking to Mason, reports said. Bentley, a state representative and dermatologist, was elected governor in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.
