In a paper, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, scientists discuss how a key skin protein barrier called filaggrin acts on other proteins, which ultimately drives the development of eczema.

Their findings have lead them to identify possible targets for future medications that treat the cause of the disorder, rather than its symptoms.

Research from several years ago by scientists at the University of Dundee found that a lack of filaggrin in the skin leads to a different skin condition known as ichthyosis vulgaris, which is strongly linked to atopic eczema.

“We have shown for the first time that loss of the filaggrin protein alone is sufficient to alter key proteins and pathways involved in triggering eczema,” said lead investigator of the study Nick Reynolds, in a press release.

“This research reinforces the importance of filaggrin deficiency leading to problems with the barrier function in the skin and predisposing someone to eczema.”

To mimic the skin observed in patients with atopic eczema, the researchers created a human model system in the laboratory. They used molecular techniques on the model to make the outermost layer of the skin filaggrin-deficient.

They then studied a number of regulatory mechanisms affected by the protein, which control various functions, such as stress responses.

“This latest research from Newcastle is crucial as it expands on our knowledge of how filaggrin impacts on other proteins and pathways in the skin, which in turn trigger the disease,” said Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists. “This type of research allows scientists to develop treatments that target the actual root cause of the disease, rather than just managing its symptoms. Given the level of suffering eczema causes, this is a pivotal piece of research.”

The term eczema refers to a group of conditions that cause inflamed, irritated skin. The most common type is atopic eczema. It’s a chronic condition that most often begins before age five, and tends to come and go, causing inflammation. Symptoms vary widely from person to person, but can include severe itching, red to brownish-gray patches of skin, raised bumps, and scaly skin.

Many people with the condition need to try various treatments to figure out what works best for their specific symptoms. There are different types of medications available that help control itching and inflammation, help repair skin, and fight infection. There’s also therapies such as wet dressing, light therapy, stress treatments, and behavior modification or biofeedback to help reduce habitual scratching. To reduce itching and soothe inflamed skin, Mayo Clinic recommends an extensive list of self-care measures, such as taking a bleach bath, moisturizing your skin at least twice a day, wearing smooth-textured cotton clothing, and using a humidifier.

Civil society organisations and some lawyers have given the presidency till May 29 to disclose the true state of health of President Muhammadu Buhari.

NAIJ.com gathered that they have threatened to hold protests throughout the country if the presidency fails to do so on or before May 29 which marks Buhari’s second anniversary in office.

Expressing disappointment with the way information surrounding the President’s health status is being managed by his handlers, these groups and individuals warned against a repeat of Nigerians’ experience during the government of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.

The president, Campaign for Democracy, Bako Usman, said hiding Buhari’s health status has not been helpful, The Punch reports.

He added that there is nowhere in the constitution where the president’s health status should be treated as classified information.

Usman said the group is giving the presidency a two-week ultimatum for it to declare Buhari’s health status.

On his part, the spokesperson for Free Nigeria Coalition, Ariyo-Dare Atoye, said his group was giving the presidency till May 29 to fully disclose Buhari’s health status.

He said the group would organise a rally and even reach out to Nigerians to protest against the handling of Buhari’s health in the days to come.

Also speaking, the publicity secretary of Youth Arise for Nigeria, Liborous Oshoma, called on the president and the cabal to do the right thing on or before the administration’s second anniversary in office.

He said: “Can Nigerians, in all honesty, declare the person that appointed them incapacitated because it will mean they may also be packing their bags? We employed him. He came to us to seek employment and he campaigned. Then we employed him with our votes collectively. So he is answerable to us as his employers. So if he is resting, we need to know why he is resting.”

Reacting to a recent statement by the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, that the president was resting until he was fit to resume work, a lawyer and human rights activist, Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa, said it was an admission that Nigeria’s leader was unfit.

“By May 29, all of these issues should be sorted out,” he said.

Also, a constitutional lawyer and human rights activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said he is fully in support of the May 29 ultimatum and will join the protest, anywhere, anytime, any day.

The board chairman of the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, popularly called Intersociety, Emeka Umeagbalasi, also declared his support for the May 29 ultimatum.

He said it was obvious that some people are bent on holding the country to ransom because of money.

On his part, the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Chinonso Obasi, warned that if a cabal continues to keep secrets as regards the President’s health, the group would have no option but to protest.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State Trade Union Congress has said those keeping the health condition of the president secret are not doing the country any good.

The state chairman of the TUC, Soladoye Ekundayo, said Nigerians have the right to know the state of health of their president.

The president of Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, Malachy Ugwummadu, described the situation as “unfortunate” and “regrettable”.

He said: “Our disposition to take a position, canvass that position, and protest is never in dispute. We have a long history of that, so our disposition and capacity to protest is never in dispute and has never been in doubt. And our protest is not only on the street, we also go to court.”

EFCC on Friday named Mrs. Folashade Oke as the owner of Flat 7B, No. 13, Osborne Road, Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, where the sums of $43,449,947, £27,800 and N23, 218,000 were recently recovered.

The EFCC stated that Mrs. Oke made the cash payment in tranches of $700,000, $650,000 and $353,700 to a Bureau de Change company, Sulah Petroleum and Gas Limited, which later converted the sums into N360,000,000 and subsequently paid it to Fine and Country Limited for the purchase of the property.
The EFCC on Friday tendered the receipt issued by Fine and Country Limited to Chobe Ventures Limited as an exhibit before the Federal High Court in Lagos, where it is seeking an order of final forfeiture of the recovered money to the FG.
In an affidavit filed before the court, a Detective Inspector with the EFCC, Mohammed Chiroma, stated that “Chobe Ventures Limited is not into any business but was merely incorporated to retain proceeds of suspected unlawful activities of Mrs. Folashade Oke.”
While urging the presiding judge, Justice Muslim Hassan, to order the permanent forfeiture of the funds to the FG, Oyedepo argued that the fact that Flat 7B, Osborne Towers was purchased in a criminal manner, made the N13bn recovered therein “extremely suspicious to be proceeds of unlawful acts.”
The lawyer noted that despite the newspaper advertisement of the initial order of April 13, 2017 temporarily forfeiting the money to the FG, no one showed up in court on Friday to show cause why the money should not be permanently forfeited.
