We all know that smoking is bad for you, and smoking in pregnant women can be especially dangerous as it affects the health of their children. However, a recent study explains a new risk; maternal smoking can lead to severe mental illness in children.
A study now published online in JAMA Psychiatry has found that children of mothers who smoke during pregnancy raise the risk of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other serious mental health conditions in their offspring. Results revealed children exposed to moderate and high levels of smoking during pregnancy had greater severe mental illness rates than children who weren’t exposed. These results remained even when sibling comparison ruled out the possibility of genetic and environmental influences.
The study didn’t prove that smoking caused severe mental illness in offspring, the researchers said in a recent press release. “Rather, these results suggest that much of the observed population-level association can be explained by measured and unmeasured factors shared by siblings,” the article concludes.
For the study, the team of researchers, led by by Patrick D. Quinn, Ph.D., of Indiana University, Bloomington, analyzed data for nearly 1.7 million people born in Sweden to understand the differences between children born to mothers who smoked during pregnancy and those born to mothers who did not not smoke. While results suggested that maternal smoking during pregnancy did significantly raise the risk of mental health conditions in offspring later on in life, the team admitted that it may be too early to conclude that one action without a doubt led to the other.
This is not the first time that schizophrenia has been linked to maternal smoking during pregnancy. In 2016, reseachers from Colombia University Medical Center found that smoking during pregnancy causes changes to the fetus’ DNA that lead to mental health issues later in life such as increased risk of schizophrenia.
“To our knowledge, this is the first biomarker-based study to show a relationship between fetal nicotine exposure and schizophrenia,” said Dr. Alan Brown, senior author and Mailman School professor of epidemiology and professor of clinical psychiatry at CUMC, in a press release. “We employed a nationwide sample with the highest number of schizophrenia cases to date in a study of this type.”

According to a report by Punch, the Senator representing Abia-North at the National Assembly, Mao Ohuabunwa, on Tuesday, said the transfer of power from President Muhammadu Buhari to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is unclear.
Ohuabunwa had raised a point of order after President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, separately read a letter from President Buhari informing the legislature of his medical vacation in the United Kingdom.
In the letter, Buhari said the duration of his leave was indefinite.
The President also said in the letter that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would “coordinate” the governance of the country during his absence.
The letter read, “In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I wish to inform the distinguished Senate that I will be away for a scheduled medical follow-up with my doctors in London. The length of my stay will be determined by the doctor’s advice.
“While I am away, the Vice President will coordinate the activities of the government. Please accept, the distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”
But Senator Ohuabunwa criticised the letter as not naming Osinbajo as Acting President and should be disregarded. He argued that the letter was not clear on the transfer of power from Buhari to Osinbajo.
He said, “Whenever the President transmits to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives a written declaration that he is proceeding on vacation or that he is unable to discharge the functions of his office, until he transmits to them the written declaration to the contrary, such function shall be discharged by the Vice-President as Acting President.
“Mr. President, I don’t think in our Constitution we have anything like ‘coordinating president’ or ‘coordinating vice president.’
It is either you are vice president or you are acting president and any letter (on transfer of power) should be unambiguous and very clear.
So, I am saying that this letter really does not convey anything because ‘coordinating’ has no space or any place in our Constitution.
“We have been having (receiving) letters like this in which he will tell us who is the acting president and we will know who to deal with as a Senate.
This is the highest legislative body of any country and if you are sending us a letter, it should be direct, unambiguous. So, I am saying that this letter, for me, is not right and maybe it should be sent back.”
But the Majority Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, countered Ohuabunwa, saying Buhari had fulfilled the provisions of Section 145 of the Constitution by transmitting the letter.
He said, “Let me say that the point of order raised by my colleague and the explanation that subsequently followed should not have been and my reasons are simple.
I still rely on the first paragraph of that letter which Mr. President wrote to this Senate and read by President of the Senate and I will read Section 145.”
After reading the section, Lawan added, “Any other word in this letter or indeed anywhere else is irrelevant.
I, therefore, feel that Mr. President has done what the Constitution requires him to do and I urge this Senate not to go ahead to discuss this because it is not an issue. We have the budget and so many other serious issues for us to discuss and Nigerians are waiting.”
Saraki, who presided over the plenary, however, ruled Ohuabunwa out of order.
“I think it is a very clear issue and what we should be guided by is the Constitution, and I think that it is clear. The letter has referred to the Constitution (Section 145) and there is no ambiguity in the Constitution. So, I don’t think there is any issue there. Let me first rule you out of order, Senator Mao.”
President Buhari on March 10, 2017, returned to the country after spending 49 days on medical vacation in the UK.

There are many ways that you can harm your precious strands of hair without even knowing it. Jumia Travel, the leading online travel agency shares 10 of these ways.
Packing Your Hair Too Tightly
Especially for females, anything too tight, particularly when done with rough elastic, can be damaging to your hair because they pull at your scalp and irritate your strands eventually causing hair breakage and damage to your roots. When packing your hair, gently pull it back with bobby pins, claws or elastic covered in fabric rather than packing too tightly.
Not Cleaning Your Styling Tools
If you fail to clean out those hairy brushes and combs, they become breeding grounds for germs and old residue. These germs and residue can irritate your scalp and clog the pores on your head. You should therefore remove hair from your brushes and combs after each styling session, and once a month clean them with a little baking soda and water to remove the oil and products that get stuck in its bristles.
Infusing Your Hair with Too Much Chemicals
Too many artificial chemicals are bad for your hair. They can cause breakage and damage to your hair, especially when done often. Try to keep chemical processes on your hair to a minimum and avoid using them often.
Heat Styling Too Often With High Heat
Excess heat strips the hair of its natural moisture, causing your hair cuticles to dry and snap off. Over time, your hair starts to look dull and starts to suffer permanent damage. To remedy this, avoid heat styling your hair at very high temperatures – don’t turn the heat all the way up. Also, try to heat style occasionally, rather than doing so on a daily basis, and avoid heat styling wet hair because wet hair is more fragile.
Perming
This weakens your hair, leaving it dull and damaged over time, your hair then starts to look brittle and dry rather than luxurious and shiny. If you cannot do without perms, avoid doing it often, only do it once awhile.
Highlights and Colouring
Over time, these change the inner structure of your hair making it look lackluster and dry, especially if they are done frequently to hide root colour or grey hair. The easy solution will be to avoid doing this often.
Excessive Brushing
Excessive brushing can cause split-ends and hair breakage because excessive brushing causes too much consistent friction for the hair to handle. Low quality brushes just make matters worse because they cause snags and tangles worsening split ends and hair breakage.
Braiding
Braiding especially when done too tightly, or on wet hair, can cause the hair to break and pull out the hair. If it is done too often, permanent hair damage can occur.
Over-Shampooing and Vigorous Hair Washing
Over-washing washes away your hair’s natural moisture making your hair dry. You can actually tell you’re over-washing your hair when it starts to look dull. This means it’s time to scale back on the washing. Also, avoid being too vigorous when washing your hair to avoid damaging your hair cuticle.
Extensions and Weaves
The effect of extensions and weaves on your hair is much like braids. They pull at the scalp eventually causing damage to the roots. The discomfort you feel on your scalp indicates their pressure on your roots. Over time, they leave the hair broken and brittle. To temper its effect, you can avoid wearing extensions and weaves for a long time. You can also make use of wigs – they make life so much easier.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The White House has postponed a Tuesday meeting to discuss whether the United States should withdraw from the landmark international climate deal struck in Paris under the Obama administration, Daily Mail UK reports.
The White House said late Monday that the meeting would be rescheduled. This is the second time a meeting of top aides on the issue has been delayed.
Trump pledged during the presidential campaign to renegotiate the accord, but he has wavered on the issue since winning the presidency. His top officials have appeared divided about what to do about the deal, under which the United States pledged to significantly reduce planet-warming carbon emissions in the coming decade.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, the former chief executive of the oil company Exxon, said at his Senate confirmation hearing in January that he supports staying in the deal. But Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt has said the Paris pact “is a bad deal for America” that will cost jobs.
Ivanka Trump, who serves as an adviser to her father, was supposed to meet separately Tuesday with Pruitt and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska. The White House did not immediately respond to questions late Monday on whether that meeting would continue.
The Paris accord, signed by nearly 200 nations in 2015, was never ratified by the Senate due to the staunch oppositions of Republicans. It therefore does not have the force of a binding treaty, and the United States could potentially withdraw from the deal without legal penalty.
A senior administration official said the president’s inclination has been to leave the pact, but Ivanka Trump set up a review process to make sure he received information from experts in the public and private sector before a making a decision. The official requested anonymity to discuss private conversations.
As speculation continues about how Trump will handle the agreement, Tillerson is set to travel to Alaska for an Arctic Summit council this week amid concerns from other nations that the Trump administration will undermine global efforts to address climate change in the Arctic, where rising temperatures are having a disproportionate effect.
David Balton, a top U.S. diplomat who works on environmental issues, said there would be “no change” in U.S. participation even if Trump ultimately decides to pull out of the Paris pact.
“The U.S. will remain engaged in the work that the Arctic Council does on climate change throughout,” Balton said Monday.
In his prior post as the elected attorney general of Oklahoma, Pruitt closely aligned himself with the needs of the state’s oil and gas industry. He repeatedly sued the EPA over restrictions on extracting and burning fossil fuels. Among the regulations he opposed in court was the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which sought to place new restrictions on carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants with the goal of helping the United States meet its commitments under the Paris accord.
Like Trump, Pruitt has questioned the consensus of climate scientists that man-made carbon emissions are the primary driver of global warming.
Over the weekend, the EPA administrator released a letter stating that under federal ethics standards he is obligated to recuse himself from legal cases he was involved with in his old job. However, in his letter Pruitt said his recusal does not extend to matters of “general applicability,” such as making policy decisions involving current or future environmental regulations. The EPA contends, therefore, there is no ethical issue with Pruitt making decisions to roll back carbon limits he previously opposed in court, because those decisions affect the nation as a whole rather than just Oklahoma.
“Federal ethics rules distinguish between specific party matters such as an individual permit or lawsuit and matters that apply generally such as a nationally applicable regulation,” said Kevi Minoli, the EPA lawyer who advises Pruitt on ethics issues.
High-profile supporters of the deal on Monday urged the U.S. to stay in the Paris accord. In a conference call organized by the liberal Center for American Progress, Brian Deese, a climate adviser to former President Barack Obama, said that “the race is on for which countries are going to be the 21st century clean energy super-powers.”
Deese said the U.S. must decide whether to “continue to play in that race or step off the field.”
Mindy Lubber, president of the nonprofit Ceres, which works with companies on sustainability issues, said that investors around the world are “eager to open their wallets to a low-carbon future.”
“We must stay in Paris, we must pass on a healthy economy and a healthy environment to our children,” Lubber said.

Did you know that you can do crunches, day in and day out, and still not achieve that flat stomach you were hoping for? According to beautyandtips.com flat ab exercises, like crunches, are great for toning and building muscles, but they do little to burn off the fat. If you want to get a flat stomach, you will need to eat a healthy, low calorie, diet and get plenty of cardiovascular exercise, so that you burn off more calories than you consume. Having said that, some foods are better than others for a flat stomach and some are even positively perfect for it. So, if you are working hard towards gaining a flat belly, check out these ten foods that will help you achieve your goal.
1. Apples
Red or green, apples are an ideal food to eat when you are losing weight because they are packed with fibre and they make you feel full fast. The very act of chewing on apple fools your brain into thinking you have eaten more than you have, but as apples are around 85% water, you will have consumed far less than you think. In one study, it was found that women who consumed three apples a day lost weight faster than those who did not eat any at all.
2. Almonds
Almonds are little powerhouses of goodness and they contain many of the vital ingredients that will help you lose weight around your belly. They contain fibre to fill you up, protein to boost your metabolism, and magnesium to boost your energy levels. Recent research has also suggested that almonds contain compounds that actually slow the absorption of fat into the body.
3. Red peppers
It has also been found that foods that contain antioxidants can help in the fight against belly fat. Researchers recently proved that people who eat a diet that is rich in beta carotene and lycopene tend to have smaller waists than other people, because the antioxidants combat the compounds that cause fat to be stored around the abdomen. Red peppers are an ideal food to boost your intake of antioxidants and they also contain Vitamin C, which the body needs to be able to burn off fat.
4. Yoghurt
The probiotics that are found in yoghurt will help keep your digestive system in good working order and prevent constipation, gas and bloating. You also need to keep up your intake of calcium when you are losing weight and yoghurt has been proven to be the best source of calcium for people trying to lose fat, according to a study published in the International Journal of Obesity.
5. Salmon
Increasing the amount of omega-3 fatty acids that you consume will also be an aid in your fat burning effort. Amongst the many other health benefits of Omega-3’s they are also thought to make your metabolism more efficient and to be able to control insulin levels. Eat more oily fish, like salmon, and it will help control cravings and make you losing fat from around the stomach easier.
6. Whole grains
It should come as no surprise that whole grains make it into this list of foods to eat for a flat stomach. Whole grains contain far more fibre than their refined counterparts and much higher levels of nutrients, including magnesium, which helps to regulate the metabolism of fats. Research has shown that people who eat whole grains put on far less weight around their tummy, than those who eat refined grains.
7. Grapefruit
The acidity of grapefruits is thought to slow down the digestive system, so it can make you feel full after a meal, for much longer. In fact, in one study, researchers found that people who ate three portions of grapefruit every day lost weight without changing any other aspect of their diet at all.
8. Beans
Beans are very high in protein and an ideal food to substitute for animal products, if you want to go vegetarian, which could help you lose belly fat. Studies have shown that going on a low calorie vegetarian diet is one of the most effective ways to lose weight around the abdomen. It has been found that a purely vegetarian diet burns more of the deep, visceral, abdominal fat than a diet that relies on meat and fish for protein.
9. Garlic
Thermogenic foods, like garlic, chillies, and peppers, raise the core temperature of your body and maximise the burning up of fat for energy. By adding more spices to your food, you will burn off the calories that you consume far quicker.

A pencil dress is an extension of a pencil skirt. It is a great piece of clothing as it beautifies your curvy figure. Here are a few pointers that will help you choose one
Decide on what suits you
Pencil dresses are structured, fitted and complement women who have slender, yet a little curvy figure. There are numerous styles and colours of pencil dresses, so you must decide on what suits you before you go shopping for one.
Choose the right colours
The colour and fabric of your pencil dress are important. Dressy occasions call for drama. Black velvet fits the bill and is incredibly versatile. Wool is another good choice. Buy the finest quality your budget allows. Look for a dress that you can accessorise in several ways, so that each time you wear it, it shows a new and exciting face. Other colours can work, but you lose in versatility. Black does go with everything which is why we hear so much about the little black dress. It also works for pencil dresses too.
Formal look
According to timesofindia.indiatimes.com, if you think that a pencil dress is too stylish to wear for formal occasions, then you’re wrong. You just have to choose the right style and colour. A pencil dress shouldn’t be too revealing for the formal look. Maintain a decent neckline that looks sophisticated. Choose a well structured fabric that is less figure hugging.
Casual look
The sky is the limit when choosing a pencil dress for casual occasions. You can experiment with different necklines, fabric and styles. Go strapless, V-neck, boat neck, plunge neck or any other style that you want. You can choose from bright colours to magnificent hues as per your skin tone. And there are no rules to maintain the length of the pencil dress.
Worried if it’ll look good?
If you think that a pencil dress won’t suit your figure, you need to change that perception. It is one dress that looks great on any kind of figure, plump or slim. The bottom line is to know your body type before you make your pick.
Plump women
It is a myth that pencil dresses are not meant for plump and curvy women. All you have to keep in mind is the fabric; choose wisely if you are a little plump. A fabric that is too thin sticks to your figure and enhances unwanted curves. Wear darker colours like black, brown, navy blue and dark green.
Slim women
If you are slim with little curves then fret not, you too can wear a pencil dress. Choose a thick but structured fabric that won’t look loose on your figure. Wearing dark colours can make you look too slim hence go for bright and neutral shades like pink, beige, coral, peach, etc.
Get creative and let your pencil dress do the talking
A pencil dress is a team player. Accessories and your flair are what make the costume work. With this lovely trend-setter in your wardrobe, you’ll be known as one stylish lady!

According to a report on Post Nigeria President Muhammadu Buhari, has embarked to London, on Sunday night, for what his office said was a “follow-up medical consultation” with his Doctors, after weeks of mounting concern about his health.
Buhari’s move by embarking on the medical leave however, contradicted the Information Minister, Lai Mohammed’s insistence, that the President was “hale and hearty” all the while.
Earlier on Sunday, he was pictured sitting in an armchair at his residence, dressed in white traditional robes, looking painfully gaunt, surrounded by 82 recently released Chibok schoolgirls.
Recall, that Buhari’s previous trip to London in January, was billed by his office as a 10-day holiday, combining “routine medical check-ups”, but it was later extended from early February, and he only returned in early March.
The Presidency Spokesman, Femi Adesina, said the 74-year-old Buhari’s Doctors, would determine how long he stayed in the British capital.
“The President wishes to assure all Nigerians that there is no cause for worry”, Adesina said in a statement posted on the Presidency’s Facebook page and Twitter feed.
“He is very grateful for the prayers and good wishes of the people, and hopes they would continue to pray for the peace and unity of the nation.”
“The length of the President’s stay in London, will be determined by the Doctors. Government will continue to function normally under the able leadership of the Vice President (Yemi Osinbajo)”, Adesina said.
Recall, that Buhari had not been seen in public for several weeks until last Friday, when he attended weekly prayers at the Presidential Villa, after missing the last three cabinet meetings and other engagement.
Buhari had also been under pressure to disclose the nature of his illness, but has said he would have to have a follow-up treatment, in London.
The health of Nigeria’s President, has been a sensitive issue after Umaru Musa Yar’Adua fell ill and died in office, in 2010, from a long-standing, but undisclosed kidney complaint.
