The acting U.S. ambassador to China has resigned over President Donald Trump’s decision to leave the Paris climate accord.
China expert and former journalist John Pomfret also wrote on Twitter that the charge d’affaires at the U.S. embassy, David Rank, had personally informed embassy staff of his decision.
A U.S. embassy spokeswoman would only confirm that Rank had made a “personal decision.”
“We appreciate his years of dedicated service to the State Department,” she added.
Rank has worked in the US foreign service for 27 years.
He was acting ambassador while the embassy awaits the arrival of Trump appointee Terry Branstad at the end of June.
On June 1, Trump announced during a speech at the White House Rose Garden that he had decided to pull out of the landmark climate deal, in part because it would not reduce global temperatures fast enough to have a significant impact.
Trump said: “even if the Paris Agreement were implemented in full, with total compliance from all nations, it is estimated it would only produce a two-tenths of one degree Celsius reduction in global temperature by the year 2100.
“Tiny, tiny amount.”
Trump said he would “terminate” U.S. obligations to the Green Climate Fund, a main arm of UN climate funds, saying Washington had already paid one billion dollars and that “many other nations haven’t spent anything, and many of them will never pay one dime”.

The Federal Government says social values have been eroded, adding that Nigerian youths have embraced same sex marriage.
The government said some youths had even staged a protest before the National Assembly for the repeal of the Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act which prescribes a 14-year jail term for anyone who enters into a gay marriage.
The Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Dr. Garba Abari, said this during a programme titled, ‘Anti-Corruption: The Role of Media as Change Agents’ in Abuja on Saturday.

Nigerian singer Oyindamola Johnson Emmanuel, aka Dammy Krane, was arrested on Friday for grand theft and credit card fraud in the US after he allegedly used stolen credit card details to book a jet for a trip to Miami from a private jet leasing company, Tap Jets.
This was revealed when Sunday Scoop sought to ascertain from insiders close to the embattled singer what the true story is. According to one of Dammy’s aunties, who lives in the US and who pleaded for her identity to be shielded, he was only a victim of circumstance.
She stated, “We don’t stay in the same state over here but Dammy came to visit me just last week. I got the news of his detention on the Internet just like everybody else. After making some calls, I was able to confirm that he was indeed arrested.
He has been in the US for some time now and he has regularly been booked for shows all across America. The guy he was arrested with had actually booked him for a show this weekend in Miami.”
Speaking further, she said: “And he (Chukwuebuka) was the one that paid for the jet and made hotel reservations with the stolen card details. You know it is a usual thing for show promoters to book flight tickets for artistes, so one cannot blame Dammy in this situation.
A lawyer has already been contacted but unfortunately, Dammy would have to stay in jail till Monday when they would be able to go to court to perfect bail conditions.”
