For most, denim is a wardrobe staple. For some, it’s an investment. Regardless of which camp you fall into, your jeans are probably one of the hardest working garments in your closet and as a result, they tend to take a beating. If you want to maximize your cost-per-wear, you’re going to need to be ready to shell out for repairs. The guidelines for dutiful upkeep remain the same regardless of the type of denim. While denim is designed to be durable, it’s not indestructible.
Heddels.com gives 7 ways to make your denim last longer:
Get the right size
Different brands fit differently (some run big, some run small). By the same token, some brands will shrink after your first wash and others will give with wear. If your jeans are too small, it will lead to more abrasion and quicker blowouts, not to mention threaten your unborn children. It’s really important when you’re shopping around that you speak with sales assistants that are personally familiar with the nuances of fit associated with the brands they represent.
Buy raw
At the risk of preaching to the choir, you should buy raw denim. If you want long-lasting denim, there’s no sense in buying a pair that’s already had a year of life sandblasted off of them.
Go heavyweight
If you really want to put your jeans through the ringer, go heavyweight (anything above 16oz). More cotton simply means there’s more for you to work through.
Wash your jeans
You should most certainly wash your jeans (if you want them to last longer). If you don’t, your denim will absorb all the dirt, grime, and sweat that comes with wear, creating harmful friction, that will wear down the cotton. When it comes time to wash your jeans, spot-clean first, as not all stains warrant an all-over wash. Also, be sure to wash them using cold water, with a non-abrasive detergent (if necessary at all). Select the gentle or delicate cycle setting if you choose to use a washing machine or put them in the tub.
Hang dry them
You shouldn’t put your jeans in the dryer! Subjecting your jeans to high heat causes shrinkage (which increases stress points), expedites the breakdown of the cotton fibers, and can cause some really funky new creases. Once you’ve finished washing, be sure to either: hang dry, roll, or lay your jeans flat.
Be diligent about repair
Crotch blowouts, busted button-holes, pocket bag wear, and frayed hems are all common plights associated with well-worn denim. Just be sure to take them to someone who knows what they’re doing.
Keep ’em in rotation
Don’t succumb to the urge to wear the same pair of jeans week-in and week-out. You should do your best to avoid wearing the same pair for days or weeks at a time. It will give your jeans a chance to wear and dry out.
Even if you follow all of these tips, your jeans will eventually fade away, but hopefully this info will help you slow down the process.

Drinking just a couple beers throughout the week may be hurting your health more than you think: Even moderate drinking can damage your brain, new research from the University of Oxford in the U.K. suggests.
In the study, researchers recruited 550 people, tracked their weekly alcohol intake, and measured their performance on brain tasks over a 30-year period. Then, they performed MRIs on them to analyze their brain structure.
They discovered that people who drank moderately—14 to 21 units of alcohol per week—were three times as likely to have deterioration in the right side of their hippocampus than those who abstained from alcohol. That’s important, since that area of the brain affects your memory and spatial navigational skills. Atrophy there is also a marker of Alzheimer’s disease, the researchers say.
Here’s what that means for your pub visits: Each unit contains eight grams of alcohol, and a standard drink is roughly 14 grams of alcohol. That’s 12 ounces of regular, 5 percent alcohol beer, or 5 ounces of 12 percent alcohol wine. So that means drinking between 8 and 12 beers a week would put you in that risk category.
People who drank more—at least 17 beers a week—showed even more deterioration in that brain region. They were nearly six times as likely to show atrophy in their hippocampus than those who didn’t drink at all.
Interestingly, there was no link between light drinkers and brain deterioration, showing that there doesn’t seem to be any brain benefit to drinking just a little bit.
Plus, the more alcohol people drank, the poorer their density of white matter—a part of the brain necessary for cognitive function—and the greater their decline in specific language skills.
Alcohol and its byproducts are toxic to nerve cells in your brain, and can cause structural damage in important areas of your brain like the hippocampus that are used in daily mental functions, the researchers say.
This suggests that even drinking within the recommended alcohol guidelines—no more than two drinks a day for men—may still contribute to some brain problems.

Wazobia FM’s Omotunde Adebowale David, better known as Omotunde Lolo 1, has said she is willing to get married again. The mom of four said, it’s not easy being a single mom at her age and she is willing to give marriage another shot.
She said this to Adewoyin Adeniyi in an interview with TheNation. When asked if will give marriage another shot, she said: efinitely; when the right man finds me. Being single at my age is very challenging and you never know it until you get there.
A lot of people just demonise women that are single. You hear about domestic violence every day, although I never experienced it. If they leave, people demonise them; when they stay, they get battered or their lives don’t move forward.
There are many psychological issues that can go on in a person’s life beyond beating. When they die, people start asking why they didn’t leave. When I find someone that understands me completely and that we can put our hands on each other and make it work, I will definitely give it a shot.
On what went wrong with her previous marriage, she said: “Let’s just say I had no wisdom at that time, although I wasn’t young when I got married. I guess I was very naïve on many issues of life and it was just foundationally wrong.
I wouldn’t blame him or myself, that’s why I don’t demonise my ex. He is a good father to his children, and he is a very quiet man that doesn’t like issues. It is us that didn’t work but we are still friends and our kids have the best of us.”

Niger Delta militants have issued an October 1 ultimatum for northerners to leave their region, in response to the quit notice given to the Igbo by some Arewa youth groups, The Cable gathered.
The militants also said the FG should hand over all oil blocs controlled by northerners to the people of Niger Delta.
In a joint statement released on Friday, the coalition of Niger Delta militants also said they will declare the independence of the region on October 1. “A coalition of the Niger Delta militants met today in Port Harcourt to review the recent call by the Arewa Youths groups that the Ndigbo should vacate all the Northern states within three months,” it reads.
“We see the declaration by Arewa Youths as a declaration which the northern elders, leaders, political elite, security heads from the North and governors were fully aware of . We demand 100% control of our resources.
We demand that the FG should hand over all oil blocs owned by northerners to Niger Delta indigenes. All the companies operating in such oil blocs/wells should vacate within three months.
The FG should immediately relocate NNPC and all the offices that have to do with oil/gas sector back to Niger Delta states and immediately replace the Group Managing Director with an indigene of Niger Delta.
All northern indigenes working in NNPC and any other board that has anything to do with oil/gas should be sacked with immediate effect. We demand an independent and sovereign Republic of Niger Delta.
Our money has been used to fund Boko Haram, a problem created by the Northerners in order to use it as conduit pipe to siphon the resources of Niger Delta. On October 1, 2017 we shall declare our independence come rain, come shine.
We shall take our destiny in our hands and free ourselves from the slavery of the North as they are tired of one Nigeria. From October 1, 2017, we don’t want to see any northerner close to (the) Niger Delta; any attempt to penetrate shall meet fierce resistance. This time, we are not going to play defence, but attack.”

The President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria (NSN), Dr Bartholomew Brai, has called on care-givers, parents and guardians, to include dairy products such as milk in the diet of children, Tribune reports.
He said taking a glass of milk everyday can thwart the risk of malnutrition of children between the ages of six months and fifteen years.
Speaking during the World Milk Day Celebration established by the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) and organised by Arla Dano in Lagos, Brai expounded the nutritional value of milk on children physical development and growth, also emphasizing on the strict practice of exclusive breast feeding of new born babies for the first six months.
He said, “Milk is a complete meal especially for growing children.”
“That is why we emphasize that new born babies should be fed exclusively with breast milk for the first six months of life. This is because the breast milk from the mother contains all the nutrients a baby needs including water, protein, carbohydrates and other micro nutrients.
“For older children, milk is very important for their growth because of the rich energy present in milk. We have fat that can be used for energy production and the protein in milk is high quality protein with essential amino acids. Milk also contains calcium and phosphorus, which the body needs for strong bones and teeth. Milk contains vitamins D and B2 needed for blood formation and energy release respectively. Milk is a very rich food.”
Continuing he said, “A nation willing to curb malnutrition must cultivate the habit of drinking milk every day. A glass of milk everyday can make that significant difference especially in the lives of children between six months and fifteen.”
Tagged “Raise A Glass, Nourish a Child”, the 2017 World Milk Day was used by the Nutrition Society of Nigeria in collaboration with Arla Dano to raise awareness for milk-intake and had over 2000 school children in attendance.
Speaking at the event, the wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, represented by Mrs. Oyinlola Adejare corroborated the nutritional significance of milk in children’s meal.

Concealer isn’t the only way to fake eight hours. Research found that a combo of liner and mascara made eyes look 6 percent bigger. To reap max benefits, try these enlightening moves from makeup pro Suzy Gerstein, Women’s Health mag.
Step 1. Lid Eye Shadow
Bright eyes look more awake, so apply a peach hue (it nixes discoloration), such as L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Mono Eye Shadow in Little Beige Dress, from the lash line to just below the crease.
Step 2. Crease Eye Shadow
Blend a rose-gold shade, like Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Antique Rose, into the crease, which will create the illusion of depth, making your eyes look larger.
Step 3. Mascara
Sweep on a lengthener, like Revlon Super Length Mascara, and let it dry. Then apply a second coat to the lashes at the outer corners, focusing on building volume there, which draws the eyes up and apart.
Step 4. Liner
Choose a gel formula, such as Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner. that closely matches the color of your lashes (brown for light hair, black for dark). Draw an ultrathin stroke (sans the winged effect) along the upper lid. Skip liner altogether on the bottom; it minimizes eyes.

Nollywood actress and mother of one, Uche Ogbodo, had a failed marriage with ex-Nigerian Footballer, Ato Ubby. The marriage crashed after a couple of months.
In a recent interview with Vanguardngr, she spoke about life as a single mom. She said: “As a single mother, life is more fulfilling than it would have been as a single girl without a child.
I’m still hoping to find that wonderful human being that would fill the remaining part of my needs. I’m open to anything. Yes, I’m dating, but I haven’t found the one.
Back in the days, I used to say this is the kind of man I want and all that but you know, we’re women and when a different kind of man comes and lies to you, you just fall head over heels.
In the past, I always painted pictures, but eventually I fell for the wrong person. So, let God give me the kind of man that he knows is best for me.”
On her relationship with your ex, she said: “We’re not talking. He doesn’t keep in touch, but that’s fine.”
On what fame has robber her of, she said: “Fame has also brought me negative attention from guys in the area of relationship. People tend to fall in love with the you on TV and not the real you.
And when they get to know the real you, they might not like it, but still stick around just because you’re famous. And then you end up hurting each other, because the relationship is fake and based on fantasy.”
On the babymama trend, she said: “I’m a single mother already. It happened by fate. I never wanted it to happen this way. I wanted to be married. I think it’s an individual thing. I don’t judge people.
I want to get married. I need a partner in my life, because I don’t think I want to spend the rest of my life alone with my children. Even at this age, my daughter keeps asking me about her father. She has never seen him.
This isn’t what I want and it hurts me sometimes. But what can I do and I am hoping that I can get a good daddy for my daughter. I pray that someday I will be able to say to my daughter ‘This is your daddy’, because every time she asks I never say anything.”

Washington buzzed with new questions Friday after ousted FBI director James Comey accused President Donald Trump of lies and defamation, in gripping testimony that undermined an already troubled White House.
During almost three hours of extraordinarily frank statements before a Senate committee Thursday, Comey described himself as “stunned” by Trump’s “very disturbing” and “very concerning” behaviour in several meetings.
Detailing one-on-one talks with a sitting president — which under normal circumstances are private — Comey said he took painstaking notes for fear Trump might “lie” about the unusual encounters.
The testimony painted a devastating picture of an untrustworthy president, who at best unknowingly shred the norms of office by pressing Comey on a probe into Russian election meddling, and at worst may have criminally obstructed justice.
Pundits and legal experts were divided on whether Trump’s actions rose to the level of obstruction of justice, a potentially impeachable offense, while Comey said that decision was now in the hands of a high-powered special prosecutor.
Trump has not directly addressed Comey’s explosive accusations but will face the media on Friday when he holds a joint press conference with the visiting president of Romania.
On Thursday, he defiantly told supporters at a scheduled event: “We are going to fight and win.”
During one White House dinner, Comey recalled that the president asked him for “loyalty” and to lay off his former national security advisor Michael Flynn — who is under criminal investigation over his Russia ties — imploring Comey to “let this go.”
Comey said he believed he was sacked over his handling of the Russia investigation, which includes probing allegations that Trump’s campaign colluded with Moscow to tip the election to the real estate tycoon.
“I was fired in some way to change, or the endeavour was to change the way the Russia investigation was being conducted. That is a very big deal,” Comey told senators.
Easing months of speculation, Comey confirmed that Trump was not personally under investigation when he left the FBI last month.
The White House and Trump’s lawyers expressed vindication over some parts of Comey’s testimony and lashed out at others.
“I can definitely say the president is not a liar and frankly am insulted by that question,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.
Trump’s lawyer Marc Kasowitz said the president “never told Mr Comey ‘I need loyalty, I expect loyalty’ in form or substance,” rejecting the key allegation.
Deploying Trump’s trademark bare-knuckle style, Kasowitz also suggested the ousted lawman should be prosecuted for leaking “privileged information.”
A visibly aggrieved Comey kicked off his testimony with a bid to set the record straight about the state of the bureau he led until he was sacked last month.
“Although the law requires no reason at all to fire an FBI director, the administration then chose to defame me and more importantly the FBI by saying that the organisation was in disarray, that it was poorly led, that the workforce had lost confidence in its leader,” he charged.
“Those were lies plain and simple,” Comey said, firing a shot of tension through hearing room 216 of the Senate’s Hart building, which stood silent except for the shutter clicks of photographers capturing the political theatre.
Democrats are intent on determining whether Trump’s actions amounted to obstruction of justice, while Republicans zeroed in on Comey’s admission he assured the president he was not personally an FBI investigation target.
Trump abruptly fired Comey as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation on May 9, admitting later that the Russia probe was on his mind at the time.
In a written statement, Comey described his mounting discomfort in the weeks leading up to his dismissal as Trump pulled him aside in person and phoned to press him on the probe into his campaign associates and possible collusion with Russia.
At a private White House dinner on January 27, just days after the billionaire took office, Comey said Trump appeared to want to “create some sort of patronage relationship” with him.
“The president said, ‘I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.’ I didn’t move, speak, or change my facial expression in any way during the awkward silence that followed,” Comey said.
In an Oval Office tete-a-tete the following month, Comey said Trump pressed him to drop the FBI investigation into Flynn, who had been fired for lying to the vice president about unreported conversations with the Russian ambassador.
Harvard Law School professor Mark Tushnet said onlookers should keep in mind that Comey knows much more than he can say.
“He’s saying that when he looks at all the evidence that he knows, that he draws the conclusion that the president was trying to pull him off the investigation of Flynn.
“It’s a pretty powerful statement that an investigator with his background (says) when I look at this investigation, this is what I conclude. So his statement is a big deal,” he said.
But Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan appeared to sympathise with Trump, telling a news conference that “the president’s new at this.”
“He probably wasn’t steeped in the long-running protocols that establish the relationships between (Department of Justice), FBI and White Houses. He’s just new to this.”

According to a report by Punch, a writer and legal practitioner , Daniella Madudu , has dragged Nollywood actress , Stephanie Okereke – Linus , before the Federal High Court in Lagos over alleged infringement on her intellectual property .
In the suit , marked FHC /L /CS /878 / 17 , filed through her lawyer , Mr . Rafiu Bello, this week, Madudu claimed that Okereke – Linus’ popular movie titled,
Dry , was an adaptation of her novel ,
Behind the veil .
The plaintiff alleged that Okereke -Linus adapted the novel , which focuses on child marriage and the attendant health complications , such as the Vesico – Vagina Fistula disease in northern Nigeria, into the movie without due authorisation.
Joined as second defendant in the suit is Joy Ndidi , a script writer and former Personal Assistant to Okereke -Linus , who the plaintiff accused of giving the manuscript of Behind the veil to Okereke – Linus.
But Okereke – Linus , in a press statement on Thursday , vehemently refuted Madudu’s claim, stressing that her interest in the subject of VVF predated Madudu ’ s manuscript completed sometime in 2010 .
The actress said while she had registered the script for Dry as far back as November 28 , 2011 with the United States Copyright Office and later with the Nigerian Copyright Commission on July 27 , 2012 , she never met Ndidi , who allegedly gave her Madudu ’ s script , until 2013 .
“The so – called ‘ original literary work’ of Daniella Madudu , that I was supposed to have appropriated in my movie , has never been registered at the Nigerian Copyright Commission even as we speak , ” Okereke – Linus said .
She said her interest in VVF dated back to her undergraduate days at the University of Calabar , adding that she had since gone on to work on the subject with a number of organisations.
The organisations , she said , included the Mercy Ships Aberdeen West Africa Fistula Centre in Sierra Leone ; the Mariam Abacha Women and Children ’ s Hospital , Sokoto ; the United Nations and the Government of Liberia , who , she said , invited her to participate in the anti – rape campaign , Stop Rape and the Liberia Fistula Project , sometime in 2008 .
She described Madudu ’ s claim as “something so ludicrous as to be able to find firm footing in the mind of any normal or rightly thinking individual . ”
The actress adds , “Dry is more than just a movie ; it is a righteous cause for voiceless women and young girls who have suffered the most debilitating kind of emotional and physical abuse , and anyone who seeks to denigrate this painful sacrifice with a smear campaign , with the intent to make gain or attract cheap publicity , simply lacks wisdom .
“ I want to take this opportunity to thank all those that have shown tremendous support and spoken up these past few days to end these words the same way it began.”
But in her suit against Okereke – Linus , Madudu claimed to have completed the manuscript of Behind the veil in 2010 when she was an undergraduate at the Obafemi Awolowo University , Ile – Ife , adding that Ndidi , also an undergraduate at OAU then, was her close friend.
Madudu said that she shared the content of the manuscript of Behind the veil , on the basis of trust and strict confidentiality , with selected book editors and close friends , including Ndidi , for quality control purposes.
She , however , alleged that Ndidi , who worked as Okereke – Linus’ personal assistant between 2013 and 2014 , gave the manuscript to the actress and film producer to adapt into a movie .
In the suit , Madudu is urging the court to declare that Okereke – Linus ’ movie , Dry , infringed on her novel .
She wants the court to restrain the actress from further infringing on her work and to order her to deliver to the plaintiffs all the copies of Dry , which had infringed on the work, Behind the Veil.
Madudu also wants the court to order an inquiry by chartered accountants to value or determine the monetary worth of the infringement and to order Okereke – Linus to pay her the sum with an annual interest of 20 per cent pre- judgment and 10 per cent post- judgment .
The plaintiff is also seeking compensation for general damages in the sum of N100 m , while also urging the court to order the defendants to bear the cost of filing the lawsuit .
The court has yet to fix a date to hear the case which was filed on Monday .
