Unitaid is to roll out a generic version of the latest AIDS drug that can improve and prolong the lives of tens of thousands of people who suffer severe side effects and resistance to other treatments in Nigeria.
Unitaid, a global health initiative, said a generic of Dolutegravir (DTG), first approved in the U.S. in 2013, is being given to 20,000 patients in Kenya before being rolled out in Nigeria and Uganda later in the year.
DTG is the drug of choice for people with HIV in high-income countries who have never taken antiretroviral therapy before and for those who have developed resistance to other treatment.
Kenya is the first African country to start using the DTG.
“I had constant nightmares and no appetite,” said Nairobi resident Doughtiest Ogutu, who started taking the drug this year because of her resistance to other treatments.
“My appetite has come back… My body is working well with it.”
Ogutu, who has been living with HIV for 15 years, said her viral load, the amount of HIV in her blood, has fallen tenfold from 450,000 to 40,000 since she started on DTG.
Sub-Saharan Africa has been at the epicenter of the HIV epidemic for decades and home to nearly three quarters of all people with HIV and AIDS.
UNAIDS aims for 90 per cent of people diagnosed with HIV to receive antiretroviral treatment by 2020.
The brand name version of DTG is Tivicay, produced by ViiV Healthcare, which is majority-owned by GlaxoSmithKline.
About 15 per cent of HIV patients are resistant, which means the medicines do not work on them, said Sylvia Ojoo, Kenya country director for the University of Maryland School of Medicine, who is monitoring the introduction of DTG.
UNITAID works to bring medicines to market quickly and to reduce manufacturing costs by allowing generic companies to access patents for a small royalty and produce them cheaply for the developing world.
Kenya, with one of the world’s largest HIV positive populations, has made great strides in addressing HIV in its public medical facilities.
“The health systems we have in place allow for rapid deployment,” said Ojoo.
“It makes it relatively easy to introduce new interventions.”
About 1.5 million Kenyans are HIV positive, with more than two-thirds on treatment, said Martin Sirengo, head of Kenya’s National AIDS and STI Control Program.
The number of new infections in Kenya has almost halved over the last decade to 80,000 a year, he said, thanks to increased testing, treatment and awareness.

The movie which has been generating attention and dominating conversation within and outside entertainment circle has been touted as a potential box-office record breaker. .

Alter Ego has been so rated for three major reasons; it is the comeback movie for leading Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde after a three year hiatus, the seeming sex scenes featuring Omotola has set tongues wagging and the producers (Moses Ewang and Esther Eyibio went all out for the production that has been described by Omotola herself as ‘pushing the envelopes’.

Alter Ego which is produced by Sidomex Universal in conjunction with Sneeze Films and directed by Moses Ewang stars, Omotola Jalade- Ekeinde, Wale Ojo, Kunle Remi, Bobby Obodo, Jide Kosoko, Sexy Steel, Gregory Ojefua and others.

According to a report by Premium Times, Olakunle Churchill, the estranged husband of controversial Nollywood actress, Tonto Dikeh, has finally fulfilled his threat of annulling his troubled marriage to his wife.
The publicity-loving entrepreneur, in company of his uncle, Bishop Dare, met with Tonto ‘s father, Sunny Dikeh, in Port Harcourt on Tuesday to retrieve the bride price.
Meanwhile, Tonto has celebrated the final dissolution of her marriage in an Instagram post which simply read, “The joy was indescribable.”
Mr. Churchill made the video of the intimate family event public on Instagram on Tuesday. In the clip, Mr. Dare could be seen celebrating the final dissolution of his nephew’s marriage to the star actress.
Apparently, the video was meant to refute claims made by Tonto a week ago wherein she stated via a leaked text that she paid her bride price herself.
Mr. Dikeh also countered his daughter’s claims in the latest video when he confirmed that Mr. Churchill did fulfil all traditional requirements.
The father also publicly announced that he has returned the bride price to his now ex-son in-law and in so doing has annulled their traditional marriage.
In the last three months, the couple has shared messy details of their 17-month old marriage with gossip-loving fans on social media.
More details surrounding the marital crisis between the two were revealed last week in a leaked chat between the actress and her now ex-mother-in-law.
In the chat, the actress said, “Thinking back and after talking to Bimbo Coker, it’s safe to say you are in on Kunle’s fraud and dirty lifestyle. Flew your son, clothed him, gave him pocket money, helped him with every sweat in my body, you watched your son dupe me for all my hard-earned money.”
She went on to reveal that Churchill’s ex-wife paid for her own wedding.
Lara Olubo, an On Air Personality who is also a niece of Churchill, released the chat online.
Tonto Dikeh was also the butt of jokes on Instagram after she posted a video of herself playing the role of her estranged husband as she attended a Father’s Day celebration in her son’s school in Abuja.
In the video and pictures, the mother-of-one transformed into a man with beards, spotting a traditional male kaftan as she accompanied her son to school.
Tonto and Churchill met two and a half years ago at Escape Nightclub in Lagos during the birthday party of the latter’s brother. Tonto got pregnant six months after they met and they staged a glamorous traditional marriage on August 29, 2015 at Tonto’s hometown Rumukani in Rumukwuta, Rivers State.
Speaking in an interview at the time, Tonto opened up on the reason why she didn’t wed in church
She said, “There was no white wedding because I was pregnant, I was also pregnant when I did my traditional wedding which was a big secret. My families were really excited and happy for me because that’s all they have ever wanted. One fear was me being an actress and the question was if I was ever going to get married.”
In February, the Nollywood star confirmed there were cracks in the marriage.
She revealed she had moved out of the house with her son. While it is Tonto’s first marriage, it is Churchill’s second attempt. He was previously married to a certain Bimbo Coker. Churchill is a nephew of a former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Harrysong who recently welcomed his twin babies by Abuja based girlfriend. The singer has reacted to allegations that he stole a picture of an adorable set of twins to announce the arrival of his new babies.
In his defense about allegedly stealing baby photos, Harrysong said,
“I’ve not seen the kids, I’ve been very very busy. They are not around yet, I just saw pictures, their mother has been sending me pictures and it’s been amazing.”
In a chat with PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday, the singer said the news broke while he and his entire team were on the set of a video shoot with Emarshall at Maryland, Lagos.
He said, “To set the record straight, the Instagram account, perezandtarela was set up by my baby mama who is very reserved and media shy, despite being a successful business woman.
She created the account with the sole aim of catalogueing the growth and development of her lovely twins. However, the account which was meant to run privately and operated by one of her younger siblings who mistakenly posted internet photographs was blown open by me.
I was obviously overjoyed and reposted the first photos on my way from Port Harcourt. With every sense of humility, it was a huge and regrettable mistake.”
The photo of the babies which he shared on his Instagram page was traced to its original source – a nursing website in the United States that had absolutely nothing to do with the singer.
The development led to an outcry on social media with many users attacking the singer for his failed attempt to fool them that the images of the babies were his. They also accused him of intellectual theft.
Harrysong, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and instrumentalist who rose to fame after his tribute song to Nelson Mandela won the “Most Downloaded Callertune Award” at The Headies 2013. At the wake of the threat of secession by Nnamdi Kanu, and the eviction notice by a coalition of Arewa Youths, that is currently keeping the nation on the threshold of palpable fear, former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has called for peace, Post Nigeria report.
Jonathan, spoke at his Abuja residence, at the full glare of the Press, when the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, former Ministers’ Forum, paid him an Eid-El-Fitr visit.
Jonathan who spoke with much gusto, disclosed that the current state of the nation is capable of scaring away investors.
Recall, that for the past few weeks, the nation has been tension soaked, after a quit notice order issued by the coalition of Arewa Youths, ordering all Igbos to vacate the North within three months.
While speaking, Jonathan said: “What improved the economy was confidence, and what made investors to have confidence, was peace.”
The former President added that, President Muhammadu Buhari “cannot do magic”, if there is so much tension in the land.
“No President can do magic, if there is so much tension in the land, because immediately there is a sense of insecurity in any country, investors go back, and when investors go back, of course, your economy will be in doom.
“Nobody wants to go and invest where you are not too sure of the security of your workers, facilities, and so on. We should all pray and work towards peace; that is the only way as a nation we can grow our economy”, he said.
The former President speaking further, congratulated Muslim brothers and sisters on the occasion of the Eid-El-Fitr, saying the period was a challenging one.
A former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; a former Minister of Special Duties, Alhaji Tanimu Kabiru Turaki; and the Spokesman of the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the PDP, were in attendance.

Four prominent people from Okun ethnic group have distanced themselves from a statement supporting Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west.
Constituents of Melaye are in the process of recalling him.
In a statement on Monday, the Okun Development Initiative (ODI) said Eyitayo Lambo, a former minister of health; Julius Oshanupin, a retired major-general; Bayo Ojo, former attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and Tunde Ipinmisho, were in support of Melaye.
But the elder statesmen denied the claim and vowed to go any length to resist any attempt of anyone who wants to “draw us into the mess going on in Kogi state”.
Demanding an apology, the elders said they do not know ODI and could not have signed a statement that they were not affiliated to.
“Our attention has been drawn to a statement purportedly issued by the Okun Development Initiative (ODI) on the ongoing attempt to recall senator Dino Melaye (APC – Kogi west). Curiously our names were given out as signatories to the document,” they said in a statement.
“We wish to state that we do not know ODI and have no relationship with the body in any form whatsoever.
“It, therefore, follows that we did not and indeed could not have signed any statement for an organisation with which we are not affiliated.
“We have earned our reputations through decades of hard work and would go to any length to resist attempts by anybody or group to draw us into the mess going on in Kogi state.
“This forgery is unacceptable to us and we demand an immediate retraction and an apology from those behind it.”
