Though you may not think about your kidneys all too often, they do play a vital role in your health.
One of their major roles is as your body’s filtering and waste disposal system…
Almost 7,000 ounces of blood cycles through the kidneys each day. And in their workings they produce urine from unwanted chemicals, excess fluid or waste.
It’s common practice these days to take medications for our ailments. And while medications may be designed to assist your body in some way, they also have to take a trip to the kidneys for filtering.
And if you think your kidneys are “safe” from the effects of those drugs, think again — around 20 percent of acute kidney failure (nephrotoxicity) is caused by prescription medications.
That’s why you should know about six common medications that can damage the kidneys more than others…
Statins
High doses of the drugs known as statins seriously increase your risk of kidney damage. People taking relatively large amounts of these pharmaceuticals are 34 percent more vulnerable to a condition known as acute kidney injury (AKI). Every year, AKI kills about 40,000 people in the United States. Rosuvastatin, atorvastatin and simvastatin are statin drugs.
Antibiotics
Renal tubular cells are key players in kidney filtration, making them particularly vulnerable to toxic effects that drugs may expose them to. Tobramycin, from the antibiotic class known as aminoglycosides, can cause higher toxicity to the filtration cells.
Antimicrobial medications known as sulfonamides (thiazide diuretics, acetazolamide, sulfonylureas and some COX-2 inhibitors), can promote swelling and inflammation of the kidneys due to crystals they create that the kidneys can’t dissolve.
If you must take antibiotics on occasion, make sure you know how to take them safely.
Diuretics
Hydrochlorothiazide and furosemide are two medications commonly taken to reduce swelling and blood pressure. But unfortunately they lead to dehydration, which promotes swelling and inflammation in the kidneys.
Antivirals
Acyclovir, a drug used to treat herpes, shingles and chickenpox, produces crystals that the kidneys can’t filter. This can lead to urine blockage and cause harm to the kidneys.
Anti-inflammatories
Whether you’re using prescription or over-the-counter options, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs — ibuprofen, naproxen sodium and ketoprofen) cause the blood vessels leading into the kidneys to narrow. When there is decreased blood flow, the tissues in the kidneys become susceptible to damage or death.
Taking anti-inflammatories at high doses or for prolonged periods is known to cause chronic kidney disease (chronic interstitial nephritis), sudden kidney failure, and progressive kidney damage.
Analgesics (aspirin and acetaminophen) are common over-the-counter medications taken for pain and fever. Like anti-inflammatories they reduce blood flow to the kidneys and can impair kidney function if used over prolonged periods.
So how do you avoid kidney damage from drugs?
According to research, most adverse events due to medications occur due to errors with prescription, lack of monitoring of the medication, and errors in taking the drug appropriately.
But that’s no always the case. Numerous drugs have been fast-tracked by the FDA into the pharmaceutical market, only to be yanked off the shelves or denied prescription after adverse effects, even deaths, were reported.
Even OTC drugs that seem harmless, like NSAIDs (which have been tied to heart attack) have been shown to have a dark side.
The best advice is to consider whether you really need to take these medications. When possible choose natural remedies so you can minimize your use of medications overall — and the dangers they carry.
Foods, spices and mindful health practices can help alleviate pain and inflammation.
When taking medications make sure you drink adequate fluids (6-8 glasses of water a day) to prevent dehydration and promote optimal kidney filtering.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper have appeared side by side in several instances this summer in which they have focused on influencing the national healthcare debate.
Now, there are rumors that Kasich, a Republican, and Hickenlooper, a Democrat, could embark on a joint independent presidential bid in 2020, Axios reported Friday.
The cross-party unity ticket would feature Kasich at the top, with Hickenlooper as his running mate, the publication reported.
In the coming months, Axios reports that the duo plans to extend the platform they’ve built up on healthcare and expand to immigration and job creation. They’re also discussing with major media outlets the possibility of a podcast or cable news show, Axios said.
John Weaver, a top Kasich adviser who served as chief strategist for the Ohio governor’s 2016 Republican presidential campaign, told Business Insider to expect to see a lot more of the pair in the coming months.
“They work very well together and will continue to lead on healthcare, immigration and probably other key issues,” Weaver told Business Insider in an email, adding a smiley-faced emoticon.
Kasich and Hickenlooper made their first major appearance together at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, in late June to criticize Republican healthcare legislation that was being debated in the Senate. They called on both parties to come together and form a better plan while seeking more stakeholder input, such as that of US governors.
The pair also signed onto multiple letters andstatements rejecting different iterations of the GOP-led healthcare legislation, leading a team of bipartisan governors who were critical of the Republican healthcare plan and process before it fell apart late last month.
On Tuesday, Kasich and Hickenlooper appeared together on CBS’s “Face the Nation” to urge for bipartisan fixes to the Affordable Care Act, the law better known as Obamacare. In another joint interview this month, the pair said they are “close” to presenting their own plan to help stabilize the nation’s health insurance markets.
“”We’re getting very close,” Kasich said. “I just talked to my guys today, men and women who are working on this with [Hickenlooper’s] people, and we think we’ll have some specifics here, I actually think we could have it within a week.”
Hickenlooper has tempered talk of a possible presidential ticket with Kasich, though he did say “you never know” when asked during a Politico Playbook Exchange event earlier this month.
Days later, he said it was “not in the cards.”
“We’re a two-party system, and that kind of a campaign generally distracts,” he told a local Denver reporter. “I mean, it’s symbolic, and I can understand the point of that, but I don’t think it’s in the cards. It’s fun to talk about but it’s not in the cards.”
Standing alongside Democratic National Committee Chair Tom Perez, he joked that the DNC leader would “kill me if I did something like that,” which elicited laughs from both men.
Kasich, who has not been shy about opposing Trump at times during his young presidency, has not ruled out a 2020 bid, hinting to reporters that he may again try to seek the presidency either as part of an independent presidential bid or as a Republican primary challenge to the sitting president.
A Hickenlooper representative did not immediately return a request for comment from Business Insider. A representative for Trump’s 2020 reelection effort also didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ginseng, Fish, Berries, or Caffeine?Listen to the buzz about foods and dietary supplements, and you’ll believe they can do everything from sharpen focus to enhance memory, attention span, and brain function.
But do they really work? There’s no denying that as we age, our body ages right along with us. The good news is that you can improve your chances of maintaining a healthy brain if you add “smart” foods and drinks to your diet.
Caffeine Can Make You More AlertThere’s no magic bullet to boost IQ or make you smarter — but certain substances, like caffeine, can energize you and help you concentrate. Found in coffee, chocolate, energy drinks, and some medications, caffeine gives you that unmistakable wake-up buzz, though the effects are short-term. And more is often less: Overdo it on caffeine and it can make you jittery and uncomfortable.
Sugar Can Enhance AlertnessSugar is your brain’s preferred fuel source — not table sugar, but glucose, which your body processes from the sugars and carbs you eat. That’s why a glass of OJ or another fruit juice can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking, and mental ability.
Have too much, though, and memory can be impaired — along with the rest of you. Go easy on the added sugar, as it has been linked to heart disease and other conditions.
Eat Breakfast to Fuel Your BrainTempted to skip breakfast? Studies have found that eating breakfast may improve short-term memory and attention. Students who eat it tend to perform better than those who don’t. Foods at the top of researchers’ brain-fuel list include high-fiber whole grains, dairy, and fruits. Just don’t overeat; researchers also found high-calorie breakfasts appear to hinder concentration.
Fish Really is Brain FoodA protein source linked to a great brain boost is fish — rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are key for brain health. These healthy fats have amazing brain power: A diet with higher levels of them has been linked to lower dementia and stroke risks and slower mental decline; plus, they may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older.
For brain and heart health, eat two servings of fish weekly.
Add a Daily Dose of Nuts and ChocolateNuts and seeds are good sources of the antioxidant vitamin E, which has been linked in some studies to less cognitive decline as you age. Dark chocolate also has other powerful antioxidant properties, and it contains natural stimulants like caffeine, which can enhance focus.
Enjoy up to an ounce a day of nuts and dark chocolate to get all the benefits you need with a minimum of excess calories, fat, or sugar.
Add Avocados and Whole GrainsEvery organ in the body depends on blood flow, especially the heart and brain. A diet high in whole grains and fruits like avocados can cut the risk of heart disease and lower bad cholesterol. This reduces your risk of plaque buildup and enhances blood flow, offering a simple, tasty way to fire up brain cells.
Whole grains, like popcorn and whole wheat, also contribute dietary fiber and vitamin E. Though avocados have fat, it’s the good-for-you, monounsaturated fat that helps with healthy blood flow.
Blueberries Are Super NutritiousResearch in animals shows that blueberries may help protect the brain from the damage caused by free radicals and may reduce the effects of age-related conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. Studies also show that diets rich in blueberries improved both the learning and muscle function of aging rats, making them mentally equal to much younger rats.
Benefits of a Healthy DietIt may sound trite but it’s true: If your diet lacks essential nutrients, it can hurt your ability to concentrate. Eating too much or too little can also interfere with your focus. A heavy meal may make you feel tired, while too few calories can result in distracting hunger pangs.
Benefit your brain: Strive for a well-balanced diet full of a wide variety of healthy foods.
Vitamins, Minerals, and Supplements?Store shelves groan with supplements claiming to boost health. Although many of the reports on the brain-boosting power of supplements like vitamins B, C, E, beta-carotene, and magnesium are promising, a supplement is only useful to people whose diets are lacking in that specific nutrient.
Some researchers are cautiously optimistic about ginseng, ginkgo, and vitamin, mineral, and herb combinations and their impact on the brain, but more proof is still needed.
Check with your doctor.

As reported by Post-Nigeria, the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari, against provoking another civil war in Nigeria, by threatening to deal with freedom fighters as terrorists.
Kanu was reacting to Buhari’s recent broadcast, and Tuesday’s alleged directive to Security Chiefs, to handle the agitations for self-determination the same way as Boko Haram and herdsmen menace.
Kanu advised Buhari to rather concentrate efforts on governance, and how to take Nigeria out of economic recession, instead of issuing threats to intimidate genuine agitators.
His words: “The directive to Service Chiefs to clamp down on IPOB, is a continuation of the Buhari’s dictatorial and undemocratic approach to governance. I find it unacceptable, abhorrent, and insulting that somebody elected by the people can turn around to dictate to them. Buhari was elected to govern Nigeria; he should get on with the business of governance, and not try to instigate another war.”
“We have refused to be provoked to arms rebellion. That is what Buhari is looking for. Buhari wants a war, but we won’t oblige him, because we are civilised people. We are democrats at heart by nature and by essence.”
He however, said that no amount of threat or intimidation would make him give up the struggles for Biafra autonomy because it is a genuine cause.
He challenged Buhari to defeat advocates of self-determination with superior arguments on why Nigeria should continue as one indivisible country, instead of thinking he could cow them into submission by force.
“This notion and idea that we can intimidate them or bang them into submission do not work with Nnamdi Kanu. I only respond to reason and logic. I am not scared by threats. Defeat me with superior arguments not with the force of arms, because it won’t work with me. Nigeria never defeated Biafra. Britain and other devilish powers did. Nigeria can never defeat Biafra.”
Kanu accused Buhari of hypocrisy by supporting the independence bid of Palestine and Western Sahara on the one hand, while clamping down on Biafran agitators on the other. His words:

His words: “How come Buhari is supporting Palestinian self-determination, Western Sahara self-determination, but wants Biafrans to be killed? That is sheer monumental hypocrisy. I want everybody liberated – Yoruba, Igbo, Jukun, Ijaw, Ibibio, etc. Convince me why Nigeria is a better option using sensible reasonable argument and not threats”.
According to Kanu: “We are not armed, and we can never be armed. IPOB has done a lot to free other ethnic nationalities from the Caliphate’s bondage of retrogression and economic emasculation. Other ethnic nationalities should be grateful to IPOB for giving them the courage and the heart to speak up and say they are not slaves.
“We are not afraid because IPOB is a peaceful mass movement, and not a violent arms group. IPOB is a nonviolent peaceful mass movement. There is no recorded event of an injury being sustained in any of the numerous IPOB gatherings. People converge in their millions to listen to this gospel of the restoration of Biafra.
“We are the most disciplined; most well- behaved mass movement anywhere on the face of the earth despite the genocidal killings, arbitrary arrests, illegal detentions without trial.
According to him, BSS was basically inaugurated to gather intelligence about the October 1 quit notice to Igbo living in the North; and to also defend communities in Biafra land against herdsmen invasion.
“No army was set up. Forget the distortions you see in the media. They only do so to attract traffic. What we have is only BSS set up to give us intelligence regarding the October 1 quit notice to Ndigbo living in the North. We are students of history. The same thing happened in 1966. No adequate arrangements were made to cater for the safe return of our people from the North and as a result, hundreds of thousands of people were massacred.
“All that IPOB is trying to do is to avoid the reoccurrence of the 1966 genocidal massacre of innocent Igbo men, women and children in the North. It is to prevent the menace of Fulani herdsmen which Buhari cleverly avoided to mention during his broadcast because they are his kinsmen. This means that he supports the killings of innocent people by herdsmen as a way of expanding their Islamic domination agenda
“The majority of our people across South South and South East support what IPOB is doing. They also support the formation of BSS that will take care of this land in terms of its security needs. Attacks by the rampaging Hausa/ Fulani herdsmen will be a thing of the past. We can no longer allow it to go on.”
“People talk about BSS as if it is something new. They have the Shariah police in the North, they also have the Hisbah police in the North answerable to Islamic courts. In the West they have OPC but here in the South East we have nothing. Why is it that when I want to safeguard the interest of Biafra, they begin to kick against it?”
Asked how BSS would confront the rampaging herdsmen since the former is not armed, Kanu said: “We don’t need arms to disarm people who are carrying guns; we know the terrains of our villages better than they”.
Continuing he said: “We shall disarm them and stop them from rampaging and invading our communities. I don’t want some ethnic bigots occupying the corridors of power to provoke us into arms confrontation, by sending troops masquerading as herdsmen to come and attack Biafra land.”

Cut down on sugary drinks and foods and fewer bacteria will grow in your mouth and your breath will smell fresher.
Brush your teeth and your tongue twice every day
Smelly bacteria can accumulate on your tongue, as well as your teeth, so don’t forget to brush your tongue, especially the back of your tongue, whenever you brush your teeth.
In one study it was discovered that brushing the tongue reduced bad breath by 70%. Remember that you should be brushing twice a day, every day.
Get regular check-ups at the dentist
Bad breath can also be caused by cavities, so it is important to keep up with your dental appointments. Your dentist will recommend how often you should have a check-up, based on the condition of your teeth and gums.
While you get your check-up, you can also have a professional clean of your teeth done and that will help keep bad breath away too.
Avoid food that causes bad breath
Certain types of food are notorious for causing bad breath, such as onions, garlic and coffee. Food that is acidic can cause bad breath as well, because they change the PH balance in your mouth, which causes bacteria to multiply faster.
Try avoiding things like tomatoes, grapefruit, pineapple and oranges and see if that helps.
Floss daily
Small particles of food can get trapped in between your teeth and brushing alone won’t dislodge it.
If that food is left there, the bacteria in your mouth will feed off it and that will cause bad breath. Flossing daily is the only way to make sure that you remove those small particles of food.
Use an antibacterial mouthwash
An antibacterial mouthwash will kill off the bacteria that brushing won’t and it will keep your mouth fresh for a long time.
Use a mouthwash after every brush and look mouthwashes that contain chlorhexidine, or cetylpyridinium chloride, because these are the best for fighting the bacteria that causes bad breath.
Drink lots of water
If your mouth gets dry, then your bad breath will get worse, so make sure that drink plenty of water throughout the day and it will help to keep your breath fresh.
You should be drinking plenty of water for the benefit of your health anyway, so increasing how much you drink will be a good thing all round.
Cut down on sugar
Sugar is another thing that the bacteria in your life love to feed off, and when they feed, that is when you get bad breath.
Cut down on sugary drinks and foods and fewer bacteria will grow in your mouth and your breath will smell fresher.
Eat more raw fruit and vegetables
When you feel you need a snack, eat raw vegetables or some fruit and that will satisfy your hunger and help freshen up your breath too.
Munching on raw foods, such as apples, carrots and celery will help to dislodge small bits of food from between your teeth and it will also increase the production of saliva that will help to wash away the bacteria.
Fresh fruit and veg will also keep your digestive system in good working order and that will help keep your breath fresh as well.
