Ever wondered why onion is an ingredient for soups to enhance taste and flavour? What about onion for garnishing suya or boiled rice? While onions may bring a tear to the eye and delight to the taste buds, surprisingly, experts say its daily intake from adulthood can help to improve memory in old age.
In a new study, researchers in Japan found that the intake of quercetin-rich onions improves cognitive function and reduces cognitive decline in elderly people.
Cognition encompasses processes such as knowledge, attention, memory and working memory, judgment and evaluation, reasoning and “computation”, problem solving and decision making, comprehension and production of language.
The study, which evaluated the effects of quercetin-rich onions on cognitive function in 50 healthy adults, might be of importance in the fight against brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
Alzheimer’s disease is a form of dementia that causes problems with memory, behaviour and thinking, and gradually worsens over time. While there is no known therapy available to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s, research has recognised that lifestyle modifications, including exercise and diet, are important for preventing the early stage of the disease.
The study involved 25 males and 25 females, aged between 65 and 84 years that had a family member to support them by also consuming the test food, to maintain a diary and to manage their physical condition.
Aside blood tests, questionnaire was used to evaluate their registration, attention and calculation, recall, language, and the ability to follow simple commands and orientation.
For the short-term memory test, the subject was first asked to memorise 10 words and to write them down immediately (immediate memory), then approximately 10 minutes later, the subject had to recall the same words to write them again (short-term memory).
The researchers, according to the study’s findings, suggested that the consumption of quercetin-rich onions improves cognitive function directly and indirectly by suppressing risk factors for dementia such as hyperglycemia (high blood sugar level).
In the 2017 journal, Functional Foods in Health and Disease, they said “Although we demonstrated the effect of quercetin-rich onions on subjects of a particular age group, our results suggested that the intervention of dietary food is required at an early stage to improve cognitive function.”
Nonetheless, researchers say that its consumption also has minimal unfavourable effects.
Previously, experts have also said that supplementing the diet with onion and extracts from the vegetable may protect the brain from additional damage linked to stroke.
The 2012 findings according to journal Nutrition suggests that onion extract may be a beneficial nutrient for the prevention of ischemic [blood-brain barrier] damage, and that the underlying mechanisms may include, at least in part, its antioxidant effects.
Moreover, food experts had said that onions is one of the richest and most readily available sources of sulphur-containing compounds which have been shown to slow down the deterioration of memory usually associated with ageing.
In addition, onion extract has also been shown to maintain the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is involved in processing emotions as well as memory.
However onions that are over-cooked may lose their memory-helping properties. They should instead be cooked on a low heat.
Onions have an amazing array of medicinal benefits and are high in vitamin C, folic acid, biotin, chromium, and calcium. This rich source of quercitin has been shown to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and triglycerides as well as help to significantly strengthen the immune system, brain, and nervous system.
Moreover, Drs Elufioye Taiwo and Hameed Halimah, both researchers at the University of Ibadan, said Morinda lucida and Peltophorum pterocarpum are brain function enhancer, too.
Leaves of Peltophorum pterocarpum and Morinda lucida are commonly found in recipes used as memory enhancer or anti-ageing in Nigeria ethno-medicine.
The experts, who observed that these plants can improve the memory of the animals in a dose-dependent manner, however said that Peltophorum pterocarpum does it better.
Also, a meta-analysis published in the October 2013 issue of Annals of Neurology showed that high adherence to a healthful dietary pattern, such as the Mediterranean diet, may be beneficial in the prevention of various conditions linked to the ageing brain, including cognitive decline, depression, and stroke.
In general, consuming a diet with differently coloured foods can help to take care of the brain functioning for a longer period of time. Such food items include broccoli, grapes and eggplant, which are also rich in both quercetin and anthocyanin.(tribune)

So much has been said about the alleged relationship between Simi, and her colleagues, Adekunle Gold and Falz. But no one really knows how the trio actually met. Simi talks about these two men in her lives and how they met.
In a chat with Punch, she traced the genesis of their relationship. “I met Adekunle Gold while I was performing at an event centre in Lagos. Unknown to me, he had been listening to me since I was a gospel artiste and he said he was a fan of my music. At that time, I just knew him as a graphic artist, popularly referred to as the ‘King of Photoshop;’ I didn’t even know he was a singer, but we just became close from there. As for Falz, he heard one of my works, and he reached out to me on Twitter. From there, we hooked up in the studio and did some things together. Soldier was actually my song, and when he heard it, we decided to work together on it,” she said.
Speaking on her relationship status, she said, “I always like to keep my personal life away from the public. All I can say is that I am in a relationship but I just don’t want to disclose the person’s name.”
On whether she entertained any fears about the success of her new album, she said, “I am not afraid of failure because I feel you learn even when you fail. I was more interested in thinking of how people would react to the songs in the album. It’s not possible for everybody to like a particular thing. Even for the biggest legends in the world; they have some people who don’t like them. I was once signed to a record label for four years but things didn’t work out well. There were times that I was really frustrated, but I have never wanted to stop doing music. Music is the one thing that I’m very passionate about.”
Speaking on how her diminutive size impacted on her childhood, she said, “While growing up, I was a bit defensive. Because of my small size, I always thought that people were trying to take advantage of me. I’m not an easy person to bully. I have a mind of my own, and I always say whatever I’m feeling; I don’t hold back. But my voice has always worked to my advantage. However, I hate it when people mimic me, or treat me like a child because of my voice.”

Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, recently ventured into the hospitality business and became a food vendor with her amala joint which she called Abula Spot.
But even as she opened the joint, not just a few wondered where and how she was able to get the money which she used in acquiring the two-storey building that houses her joint.
Reacting to the speculations, the actress claimed that she had to sell some of her landed property and also her jewellery in order to achieve her dream.
“I did not collect a loan to open my business, I saved. I had been planning to open this place for a very long time, so I had been saving. When I wanted to get my new office building, I sold some of my property. I sold almost all my gold if not everything. During that time, I sold one batch and when I needed more money, I sold the rest. I told myself to forget about gold for now because I know that I can make the money back later. With the support of good people as well, I was able to get my office building. The first lady of Kwara State who came to inaugurate the building supported me. Some of my godparents also supported me because I told them that I wanted to sell amala,” she said.
Apparently, her new found love would eat much of her time if she wants the business to survive but during the course of chatting with Saturday Beats, the actress said that she has everything figured out.
She further said that selling amala can never make her quit acting. “I can never quit my career for anything. I am a very organised person. When you are organised, you plan ahead. My life is planned and that has helped me a lot. I knew I was going to do this food business but I waited till the right time. For about a month or two, I am not going to be filming so that I can look after my business. I have a structured plan for my business. It is insured, I have an auditor who comes to look at the records. Everything is well planned,” she said.
Ojo who jokingly said that people now refer to her as ‘Iya alamala’ (amala seller) said that she is not ashamed to sell food some people perceive to be local.
“I am a local chic. I made a name for myself by acting in my local dialect which is the Yoruba language and in our culture, amala is the in-thing. I am proud to be selling amala because that is my culture. A Chinese man cannot be ashamed of owning a Chinese restaurant. What I did was that I brought something perceived to be local to the Island and I made it look posh. When something is local, it does not mean that it is dirty. People really long to eat amala and I am not ashamed to be selling it.
“I opened the Abula Spot because I noticed that on the Island, they do not really have anywhere you could go to get the local dish unlike the way we do on the mainland. When I moved to the Island, I decided that I was going to open my restaurant here. I had been planning to open this business for a long while but I did not have the time to monitor it at the time. When I saw that I had the time to go into the business, I went for it. I had two shops on the mainland so I decided to close one down,” the actress said.
