The Nation reports that the Director General of Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Onallo Akpa has denied claims that egg consumption causes or increase chances of heart attack (cardiovascular disease).
He said on the contrary, the right intake of egg builds human immune system and increases cognitive capability in children.
Akpa, who spoke at the world press briefing to commemorate the World Egg Day, organized by the association, yesterday in Abuja, faulted the various claims, stressing that beyond other benefits, moderate consumption of egg helps the eye, the skin, bones as well as pregnant women and their unborn children.
He argued that studies by the American Heart Association as well as Harvard School of Public Health further enlightened the public on the benefits and disapproved the erroneous claims.
“Egg does not contribute to cardiovascular disease. Let’s not believe in those misconceptions.
“In March, 2002, the American Heart Association guidelines were changed to allow 1 egg per day into the average healthy American diet thereby ending the association’s 30 years old campaign that limited egg consumption to 3 eggs per week,” Akpa said.
He added that, “The Harvard School of Public Health, in the same light published that moderate egg consumption, which is defined as one egg per day is not associated with increased risk of heart disease and does not have a negative impact on cholesterol neither does it affect a person’s lipid profile.
“The research finding suggests that it is saturated fat that raises cholesterol rather than dietary cholesterol.”
However, he advised the Federal Government to direct the ministry of education on need to ensure school children benefitting from the federal government school feeding programme are fed with one egg per day, without unnecessary additional food item.
Akpa emphasized the imperative of this advice, stressing the nutritional benefits of the children.
“The nutrients and energy dimension of egg makes egg an excellent source of proteins and vitamins,” he added.
In her remarks, a nutritionist from the National Hospital, Abuja, Department of Dietetics, Mrs. Sarah Abagai, expressed concerns on the unfavourable statistics of malnourished children in the country.
She said as at January this year, about 11 million children were classified stunted as a result of protein deficiency.
According to her, the statistics increased in July, 2017, revealing that in every three Nigerians, one is malnourished.
She attributed this to low purchasing power and access to good protein sources.
“The first 1000 days of a child from conception to delivery to about two years of age is very critical to a child upbringing. There is need to provide adequate nutrition at this stage,” Abagai added.

According to The Whistler, former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode has slammed President Muhammadu Buhari for asking the World Bank to concentrate development projects on Northern Nigeria.
The World Bank President, Jim Yong Kim had at a press conference in Washing DC, United States, said “President Buhari said specifically that he would like us to shift our focus to the northern region of Nigeria and we’ve done that.”
In reaction, Fani-Kayoyde took to his Twitter handle (@RealFFK) on Friday morning to criticise the president’s deed.
The former minister said Buhari sees citizens from the South and Middle Belt as “low-lifes, vassals and slaves”.
“President of the World Bank, Kim Yong Jim, has said that @MBuhari told him to concentrate their efforts on northern Nigeria.
“Why am I not surprised? After all as far as @MBuhari is concerned southern Nigerians and Middle Belters are nothing but low-lifes, vassals and slaves,” Fani-Kayode tweeted.
Meanwhile, Kim had said, “There is so much turbulence in the northern part of the country, and there is the hit that was taken from the drop in the oil prices.”

According to a report by Punchng, the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has promised to buy new cars for the just released Commissioner for Finance, Toyin Ojo and the Accountant General, Mrs. Yemisi Owolabi, in appreciation of their loyalty to the state.
The officials were released on Wednesday after spending 14 days in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
They were quizzed over alleged mismanagement of state funds.
Fayose, who made the promise at a reception organised for the duo at the Fajuyi Park in Ado-Ekiti, described the EFCC as a ‘senseless’ organisation.
He said, “They (the EFCC) have made you stronger because I have passed through that ordeal before. They wanted information to incriminate me but they can’t get because I’m transparent in financial handlings. As soon as I can I will buy the two of you new cars.”
The governor added, “The EFCC is a senseless body, because if it is not senseless, it should have known that the man who wrote the petition had been sacked because he didn’t deserve to be called a civil servant. The arrest was orchestrated by Ekiti indigenes in collaboration with the EFCC.
“I will never go and beg the EFCC, it will rather beg me. I won’t negotiate anything because I am not afraid of them. There was a subsisting court order that barred them from arresting any official of this state, but they breached the law.
“By the grace of God, I will restructure the EFCC when I become the president of this nation. I will reorganise the EFCC and make it look responsible. They detained me in 2008, but I won them in court, because the Most High God was on my side.
“They said the NNPC Group Managing Director awarded $25bn contracts illegally, the EFCC did nothing. Even the Presidency has been the one defending him now. What is their interest in Ekiti? Whose interest is the EFCC protecting?
“This was the way the Department of State Services arrested Afolabi Akanni. They even stopped the state allocation at a time, but whatever they do, Ekiti shall put them to shame,” the governor said.
The governor accused President Muhammadu Buhari of punishing the citizens of the state illegally by not constructing any road in the state since he came into office.
Narrating their ordeal in the EFCC custody, Ojo stated that the anti-graft agency begged to release them after it found nothing incriminating against them.
“I want to thank our governor and the Ekiti people, particularly workers for their prayers. The EFCC found it difficult to prosecute us because they lacked evidence.
“Fayose by his conduct boxed the EFCC to a corner, because you needed not fear when you committed no crime. By our arrests, it was clear that the EFCC has become an instrument of oppression.
“Some states took more than the bailout taken by Ekiti but nothing was done. What is their interest in Ekiti?
“They asked us to sign so that we can leave the detention but we refused. They started begging us before we left,” he said.
The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Kola Oluwawole, and the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ade Adesanmi, alleged that the EFCC was still planning to arrest more officials, saying the state would resist such attempt with the last drop of their blood.
Oluwawole described the EFCC as a meddlesome interloper, saying Sections 126 and 127 of the 1999 Constitution empowered the assembly to perform oversight functions on state finances and not the EFCC.
Also, the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kolapo Kolade, chastised the EFCC for the “unlawful” detention of the just released officials of the state.
According to him, the two officials were arrested to intimidate and harass Fayose.
He said, “Today, October 12, is exactly two weeks that they were unlawfully arrested, incarcerated and subjected to mental, emotional and physical torture by the agents of darkness called the EFCC for no just cause in an attempt to harass, oppress and intimidate our governor and our dear state.
“We have no thanks to them for releasing the government’s officials as we know it is not in their character to do so, except for the intervention of God and the judiciary.
“Those who plunged our state into debt are walking freely on the streets while the EFCC is looking the other way despite available and verifiable evidence against them.”
According to a report by Punchng , the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has promised to buy new cars for the just released Commissioner...
According to a report by Channels TV, President Donald Trump will unveil a new US Iran strategy on Friday and is expected to withdraw backing from the Iran nuclear accord, undermining a landmark victory of multilateral diplomacy.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump would unveil a broad plan to counter Iran at 12:45 pm (1645 GMT).
She did not elaborate, but Trump is expected to declare to Congress that retaining the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement is no longer in the US national interest.
This in itself does not mean the deal will collapse. US lawmakers will have 60 days to decide whether they want to “snap back” the sanctions Washington has suspended.
But it will mark a clear break with America’s allies, who have pleaded with Trump to respect the accord, and a fierce blow to the multilateral international order.
The agreement was signed between Iran and six world powers — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the US — at talks coordinated by the European Union.
UN nuclear inspectors say Iran is meeting the technical requirements of its side of the bargain, dramatically curtailing its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.
So, while US officials still insist that “America First” does not mean “America Alone,” on this issue they are starkly isolated. The other signatories all back the deal.
“This is the worst deal. We got nothing,” Trump thundered to Fox News on Wednesday. “We did it out of weakness when actually, we have great strength.”
Trump, whose address to this year’s UN General Assembly was a hymn to national sovereignty, has been railing against the Iran deal since before he was elected.
Allies pleading
In office, he has chafed at being required under US law to re-certify Iran’s compliance with the accord every 90 days, declaring that Tehran has broken it “in spirit.”
Now, as he prepares to roll out a broader US strategy to combat Iran’s expanding power in the Middle East, he feels the time has come to turn his back on the deal.
Right up until the last minute, America’s closest allies have urged Trump to think again.
After his nationalist UN speech, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini warned that the deal “doesn’t belong to one country… it belongs to the international community.”
US allies have not been convinced by the argument that the deal fell short because it left Iran free to develop ballistic missiles and sponsor proxy militias in its region.
“Mixing everything means risking everything,” a French diplomatic source told AFP. “The existential threat is the bomb. The nuclear deal is not meant to solve Lebanon’s problems.”
Europe fears not only that Iran will resume the quest for the bomb but that the US is relinquishing its leadership role in a stable, rules-based international system.
On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Theresa May called the White House to impress upon it her government’s “strong commitment to the deal alongside our European partners.”
In parallel, her foreign minister, Boris Johnson, told his US counterpart Secretary of State Rex Tillerson “that the nuclear deal was an historic achievement.”
“It was the culmination of 13 years of painstaking diplomacy and has increased security, both in the region and in the UK,” he argued.
But the US administration barely acknowledged the calls, and European diplomats in Washington privately complain that their message is not getting through.
‘We will see’
One Western diplomat said that once Trump “decertifies” the deal their efforts will move to Congress, where they will urge US lawmakers not to re-impose sanctions.
“Our embassy is working with the legislature,” German foreign ministry spokesman Rainer Breul said this week. “We are looking for dialogue, to explain our arguments.”
They will find some sympathetic ears in Congress but this won’t move Trump. His most senior foreign policy advisers have also urged him to back the deal, to no avail.
Last week, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis was asked whether he believes the Iran deal remains in the US national interest.
“Yes, senator, I do,” he replied.
“I believe at this point in time, absent indication to the contrary, it is something that the president should consider staying with.”
Since that testimony, Mattis and Tillerson have had lunch with Trump and discussed Iran, but Trump later spoke once more against the deal on Fox television.
“We will see what happens pretty soon,” Trump warned.
On Thursday, in another dramatic sign of Washington’s foreign policy direction, the US announced that it was withdrawing from the United Nations science and cultural organization UNESCO.
France’s UN ambassador expressed dismay, warning “we need an America that stays committed to world affairs.”

This said, there are some generally acceptable beauty mistakes women should avoid if they don’t want to look older. In this post are some of these mistakes. So, always look out for this whenever you are dressing for that occasion or date.
1. You overdo your makeup

Justice Nnamdi Dimgba gave INEC the permission to go ahead with the process on Monday after dismissing Melaye’s suit for lacking merit.
Melaye had filed a suit seeking to stop INEC from recalling him from the Senate following a petition it received from the constituents of Kogi West Senatorial District, which Melaye represents.
Dimgba, in his judgment, premised his opinion on the grounds that Melaye was hasty to run to the court and that he should have explored and exhausted the internal mechanisms provided by the 1999 Constitution.
According to the judge, “Melaye’s complaints are hasty, premature and presumptuous.’’
He therefore ordered INEC to go ahead with its planned verification of signatures contained in the petition.
The judge, however, ordered INEC to furnish Melaye with a copy of the petition it received, a schedule of the signatories and a full list of persons in support of the recall petition.
The judge held that the constituents who wrote the petition to INEC seeking his recall were not under any duty to serve him with a copy of the petition or offer him an opportunity to defend himself.
“I do not believe that the petitioners have the duty to serve the plaintiff with a copy of the petition. The duty of the constituents is to write and submit their petition to the electoral body.
“There is no provision in Sections 68 and 69 of the Constitution that provides the scope for the writers of the petition to inform the plaintiff of plans to recall him or for him to come and clear himself of allegations levelled against him.
The trial judge held that the only option available for Melaye, was for him to go through the verification process to be conducted by INEC.
He further held that it was only when Melaye noticed any infraction, fake signatures or names of dead persons during the verification exercise that he could approach the court to seek redress.
On the 90 days time limit set for the recall process, the court said it was doubtful of the date beginning from June 23, 2017.
He said even if it existed; the 90 days paused on July 6, 2017 when the court made an interim order on the suit.
“Ordinarily, the 90 days begins today that this pronouncement has been made.”
Melaye had among other reliefs prayed the court to declare that the petition his constituents presented to INEC for his recall was illegal, unlawful, invalid, null and void and of no effect in law.
He had further prayed the court to declare the petition invalid and of no effect, on the grounds that it was signed by fictitious, dead and non existing persons in his senatorial district.
He also contested that the recall was invalid because he was not served a copy of the petition and that not serving him a copy of the petition violated his rights to fair hearing as well as natural justice.
A sister suit filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking the nullification of the recall process was also dismissed.
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba gave INEC the permission to go ahead with the process on Monday after dismissing Melaye’s suit for lacking meri...
