Ginger, blueberries, olive oil and green tea are among the ‘superfoods’ that help fight rheumatoid arthritis, according to new research.Scientists have compiled a definitive list of foods proven to combat the symptoms of the crippling condition.
They suggest sufferers incorporate the foods into their diet to slow down the progressive, debilitating autoimmune disease.Other foods listed as having an anti-inflammatory effect range from fruits – such as dried plums, grapefruit and pomegranates – to whole grains, the spice turmeric, as well as specific oils such as fish oil.
The experts – following their review of scientific research papers – also recommended switching from a meat diet to a plant-based one. They said such foods reduce joint stiffness and pain by lowering inflammatory chemicals released by the immune system called cytokines. The foods also lower oxidative stress – the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify harmful chemicals.
The team also advised taking probiotics and quitting alcohol and smoking. There’s no cure for rheumatoid arthritis, which causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints, severely impacting quality of life.
Study author Dr Bhawna Gupta, from KIIT University in India, said: “Regular consumption of specific dietary fibres, vegetables, fruits and spices, as well as the elimination of components that cause inflammation and damage, can help patients to manage the effects of rheumatoid arthritis.
“Incorporating probiotics into the diet can also reduce the progression and symptoms of this disease.“Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis should switch from omnivorous diets, drinking alcohol and smoking to Mediterranean, vegan, elemental or elimination diets, as advised by their doctor or dietician.”
Various dietary plans for rheumatoid arthritis – such as vegan, seven to 10 days fasting and Mediterranean – have long been recommended. But the research team said their new study – only the second overall assessment of diet and food regarding the disease – provides a thorough evaluation of current scientific knowledge and makes a point of only reporting dietary interventions and specific foods that clearly show proven long-term effects.
They hope the study, published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition, can also be used as a reference for the development of new medicines. Also, pregnant women should eat more fish to boost the development of their children, new research suggests. They are usually advised to steer clear of oily fish amid fears the build-up of mercury can damage the brain of babies in the womb.
But Swedish scientists, using data from nearly 39,000 mothers and their children, have found eating seafood during pregnancy only benefits children.Children born to mothers who consumed 400g of oily fish each week while they were expecting had higher language and communication skills.
However, the researchers warned pregnant women should avoid eating anymore than this amount due to the potential effects of mercury. For the new study, researchers obtained blood samples from a small group of 2,239 women in week 17 of gestation.Prenatal mercury exposure was also calculated by asking all of the 38,581 women to report what they consumed halfway through their pregnancy.
Mothers then reported children’s language and communications skills at age five by filling out a questionnaire. The scientists at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Oslo, then performed a statistical analysis to assess the impact of mercury. For mothers who ate less than 400g of seafood a week there were clear benefits, they reported in the journal Environment International.

President Donald Trump’s former bodyguard and confidante, Keith Schiller, privately testified under oath that he rejected an offer from a Russian to “send five women” to Trump’s Moscow hotel room in 2013, according to reports from NBC News and CNN.
Schiller said that he rejected the offer, telling the Russian, “We don’t do that type of stuff.”
Schiller reportedly testified that he talked to Trump about the offer as the two walked back to Trump’s hotel room. The two men laughed about it before Trump went to bed. Schiller said he stood outside Trump’s hotel room for a while before leaving, as was his routine as the billionaire businessman’s security guard. Schiller said he does not know what happened for the rest of the night.
According to sources with direct knowledge of Schiller’s four-hour long testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, the former director of Oval Office operations adamantly rejected many of the allegations made in a collection of explosive memos written by Christopher Steele, a veteran British spy, alleging ties between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Schiller’s lawyer, Stuart Sears, said in a statement that “the versions of Mr. Schiller’s testimony being leaked to the press are blatantly false and misleading” and condemned the House Committee for leaking.
“We are appalled by the leaks that are coming from partisan insiders from the House Intelligence Committee,” Sears said. “It is outrageous that the very Committee that is conducting an investigation into leaks – purportedly in the public interest – is itself leaking information and defaming cooperative witnesses like Mr. Schiller.”
The Steele dossier, made public in January by Buzzfeed News, contains allegations that Trump declined various business deals in Russia but that the Russian government fed Trump intel throughout the 2016 presidential election.
It also includes claims that Russian spies concealed cameras in Trump’s Moscow hotel room that filmed him with prostitutes who urinated on a bed he believed former President Barack Obama had slept in.
Trump has forcefully rejected these allegations.
“Does anyone really believe that story?” he said during a press conference in January. “I’m also very much of a germaphobe, by the way.”
Natasha Bertrand and Jim Edwards contributed to this report.

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has replied his critics who accused
him of handing over a nation at the verge of collapse to his successor,
President Muhammadu Buhari.
Jonathan recounted the achievements of his government to include, handing
over a country that produced the richest man in Africa.
Jonathan said, ?I took over a Nigeria that was the second largest economy
in Africa with a GDP of $270.5 billion in 2009, I handed over a Nigeria
that had grown to become the largest economy in Africa and the 24th
largest economy in the World with a GDP of $574 billion.
I inherited a Nigeria in which the trains were not working, and handed
over a Nigeria in which citizens can safely travel by trains again. I also
inherited a country where illiteracy rate particularly in the Northern
part was alarming. I handed over a country where every state in the North
and indeed all the states had a Federal University. I inherited a country
where there was total infrastructural decay in all the unity schools and
colleges of education. But I handed over a country with massive
infrastructural improvement in almost higher institutions. I inherited a
country where agricultural inputs and production were almost zero. But I
handed over a country where a bag of rice was sold for N6,500 to N7000. My
regime since the establishment of ecological fund office did more
irrigation dams in the North and other parts of the country than other
subsequent administrations put together. I inherited epileptic fuel
supplies resulting to endless queues at the filling stations. I maintained
despite enormous challenges of fuel subsidies and handed over a relatively
stable fuel regime.
I inherited a Nigeria that was a net importer of cement, and handed over a
Nigeria that is a net exporter of cement.
In 2009 the richest Nigerian was the 5th richest man in Africa, but I
handed over a Nigeria that produced the richest man in Africa.
The former President further stated ” I inherited a country where people
were almost losing hope on the credibility of its electoral process but I
noticed that democracy will continue to grow in the African continent if
leaders value the process of elections more than the product of the
process. I handed over electoral process that engendered fairness in its
conduct and conclusiveness “.
He said, ?Even in the 2015 general elections in my country, Nigeria, there
was potential for major crisis if I was not a President duly elected by
the will of the people.
The campaigns leading to the elections almost polarized the country into
Christian vs Muslims and North vs South divide.
Most World leaders were worried that our elections will result into major
crisis.
Some pundits even from here in the United States said that those elections
would spell the end of Nigeria and that we would cease to exist as a
nation because of the polls.
That is where the leadership question comes into play.
As a leader that was duly elected by the people, I considered the peoples
interest first.
How do I manage my people to avoid killings and destruction of properties?
With the interest of the people propelling all the decisions I took, we
were able to sail through.
Indeed, we sailed through because I refused to interfere with the
independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC,
having appointed a man I had never met in my life to run it. We sailed
through because I maintained and still believe that my personal ambition,
interest is not worth the blood of any single Nigerian.
My philosophy was simple. For elections to be credible, I as a leader,
must value the process more than the product of the process. And the
citizens must have confidence in the electoral body.

A lot of people can relate to having dark circles under the eyes and they usually come up as a result of stress and burning the midnight candle. Dark circles under the eyes don’t only indicate the fact that you need rest but also points to the fact that you maybe having underlying health problems.
If you have dark circles under your eyes, here are a number of tried and tested methods that can help you get rid of them.
Sleep Well, Sleep right
It is essential you get at least seven hours of sleep daily if you ever hope to avoid waking up with inches under your eyes and a zombiefied look when you wake up. Furthermore, spending the night sleeping on your side or on your stomach can cause fluid to collect under your eyes.
This is due to gravity pulling fluids towards your eyes and the best way to avoid this is to sleep on your back with a couple of high, firm pillows under your head to help prevent that puffy look of dark circles in the morning.
Eat right, Look Good
The human body tends to retain a lot of fluids when you are dehydrated. As such, it is best you avoid fatty and oily foods such as pizza and chips and instead choose to drink more water and eat more vegetables to ease the puffiness under your eyes.
More so, alcohol is also a great culprit of dark circles under the eyes. Spending the night drinking will not only help to keep you up late but will also dehydrate you. Cigarettes also dry out your skin, amongst a list of health problems that comes with smoking.
If your puffy eyes are a result of seasonal allergies, the best way to alleviate them is to add some standard over-the-counter antihistamines to your diet.
Home Remedies That Works
A number of home remedies are effective and they include using frozen spoons, cold teabags or, and cucumbers over the eyes like you see in old cartoons. As a matter of fact, anything cold helps to reduce the swelling that causes dark circles, offering a temporary solution.
You can also choose to massage the bags under your eyes to help disperse the fluid that’s causing the puffiness. One ancient remedy that exists is known as the neti pot and it involves pouring salt water down your nostrils to clear the sinuses. You can choose to simply down a cup or two of tea in the mornings and it is definitely something you will enjoy incorporating into your grooming regime.
Avoid Late nights As Much As You Can
Whether you choose to accept it or not, the best way to get rid of dark circles is to eat early and go to bed early. Choosing to down a cocktail at 1.30am the night before an early morning will do you no good. Bags under the eyes are caused by a lack of sleep so it doesn’t take rocket science to deduce the solution to the problem.
Get A Good Eye Cream
Lots of Pharmacies have loads of drugs that all claim to effectively combat dark circles under your eyes. A lot of such products contain caffeine, retinol, grapeseed oil, collagen, hyaluronic acid, botanical antioxidants, and whatever other ingredient they can find that works to constrict the flow of blood to the eyes and ease swelling.
With so much to choose from, the best thing is to find a product that you’re happy with. While you do so, remember to add some under-eye moisturiser to your daily grooming routine.

Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson who allegedly gave birth to a baby girl has spoken up since the news surfaced that she has welcomed a baby daughter with a mystery husband.
In an audio tape in which she addressed her fans, the Ghanaian superstar said she has been too busy lately, that it was why she has stayed off the media for so long.
“I know I have been missing in action, I’m sorry guys I have been very busy. I have been running around a lot,” she started off by saying in the tape published by Peace FM.
She continued, “There so many rumours going on, I don’t know if you guys have heard, but there’s a lot of rumours ay chale. There is so much I want to say but I don’t know what to say, but I guess when the time comes I will update all of you about stuff that’s happening in my life… but I am fine and as usual I would say I blessed that I’m alive. Each day comes with a blessing and we always have to stay grateful and thank God on a daily basis.”
It was reported that the father of the child, a non-Ghanaian she is said to have tied the knot with, was also present during the birth, and these were easily believed because the actress had gone on BBC to announce that she would be getting married in 2017.
“I know you guys have itchy ears, you wanna hear all the juicy stuff but in due time I will address all of them. My day has been hectic, it’s been different,” she said.
