Ever wanted to have a hushed conversation with a friend and as soon as they lean in, they step back due to the unpleasant and smelly odour coming from your mouth. Perhaps you just had that grimy-teeth feeling that makes you feel you have the foul breath that goes along with it.
Whatever the signs are that you have noticed, you can control and correct the type of smelly odours that comes out of your mouth even when your toothbrush is not close by.
Carrying around a travel toothbrush and mini-toothpaste is always a good idea, but sometimes you may not be well prepared, be too much in a hurry or even have a sink to do it.
If you find yourself in a box where your toothbrush and other oral hygiene equipment ate unavailable, try these strategies to stop your mouth smelling and freshen your breath instead.
Drink Water
A lot of people don’t consider this when it comes to bad breath as they think water will simply spread the stink around. Oral bacteria is however anaerobic, meaning that they will thrive in the absence of oxygen and presence of dryness which is why your morning breath will smell particularly offensive if you wake up with a dry mouth.
Water does not only help to rebalance your oral environment, but it can also help you remove any food particles stuck between teeth.
Sugar-free Gum or Mints
Gum and mints have always been on standby from time immemorial as they provide a temporary solution. While they won’t destroy the bacteria that’s giving you the bad breath in the first place, but they’ll buy you time until you can get a toothbrush to do the work.
All you need to do is to ensure that they are sugar-free Because oral bacteria tend to feed on the sugars you eat, and then create acid as a byproduct. This eventually affects tooth enamel, but in the short term, it can give you bad breath.
Take Fruits
While a lot of fruits have natural sugars, they can still inhibit the bacteria activity in your mouth. For instance, apples contain polyphenols, which can suppress bacteria and help eliminate sulphur compounds in the mouth.
Fruits high in vitamin C such as oranges, tangerines and grapefruits helps to create a beneficial, acidic environment that keeps bacteria from proliferating.
Scrape Your Tongue
Chances are if you don’t have a toothbrush, you won’t have a tongue scraper handy, either. You can however improvise with everyday tools, specifically, a spoon.
The point of scraping is to get bacteria off the tongue. While a scraping tool is ideal, a spoon will work almost as well. Just hold the spoon upside down, and run it lightly along your tongue. Make sure to rinse after each Scrape and bacteria-destroying swipe.
Take Yogurt
Yogurt contains active, probiotic cultures which can be very effective in freshening your breath in the absence of a toothbrush. It competes with the bacteria in your mouth and lower how much hydrogen sulphide that bacteria gives off.
Hydrogen sulfide is one of the components of halitosis or bad breath, along with methyl mercaptan. The combination of the two has been compared to a mixture of rotten eggs and fermented cabbage which is not exactly the kind of breath you want to be sporting when you want to have a face-to-face conversation or kiss that woman of your dreams.(360Nobs)

According to Vanguard, the Federal Government, yesterday, paid N421 million to the Ikoyi whistle blower, who provided information leading to the discovery of $43.5 million, £27,800 and N23.2 million at No. 16 Osborne Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.
Vanguard exclusively gathered that the money was paid to the beneficiary by officials of the Ministry of Finance after which he left Nigeria for an undisclosed country.
It was further learned that the eventual recipient of the reward money was the person who had earlier been taken to Yaba Psychiatric Hospital, Lagos, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on the suspicion that he could be mad.
However, what government paid in line with the Whistle-blower Policy which recommended 2-5 per cent of any amount recovered for a whistle blower, was not the total amount due the Ikoyi whistle-blower.
When the next tranche would be paid could not be confirmed by Vanguard.
My client’s been paid — Lawyer
The whistle-blower’s lawyer, Mr. Yakubu Galadima, had in November, dismissed reports that his client would receive N350 million reward, saying the actual figure was N850 million.
Galadima, however, told Vanguard yesterday that payment of the reward to his client had confirmed his insistence that he was the true whistle-blower, adding that the development is expected to put an end to any doubt over who actually blew the whistle.
His words: “My client has been paid. He was paid yesterday and has since left the country. As we are speaking, he is not in Nigeria. However, the money was paid directly to him.
“The government said they were going to pay the money directly to him and that was what they did. The person that was paid was the same guy they claimed had a psychiatric problem.
“What has happened confirmed my client, who has all along been known as the principal whistle-blower as the real whistle-blower.’’

The Hibiscus drink popularly known as Zobo is a super drink which is slightly thick, colourful, pleasant and tasty. The Hibiscus leaf is used in many parts of the world to make both cold and hot drinks. It contains a high concentration of water-soluble antioxidants and is filled with huge amount of Vitamin C. Zobo is served cold in Nigeria and Senegal while it is served warm in Egypt. Here are some of its health wonders:
- Reduction in blood pressure: Hibiscus is an anti-oxidant. It has properties that prevents the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins; a substance in our blood that if increased beyond normal quantities may cause high blood pressure.
- Aids weight loss: The body produces an enzyme known as Amylase which functions to break down complex sugar and starch molecules in food. When a person consumes too much carbohydrate rich food (full of sugar and starch) that individual is most likely going to gain weight. Hibiscus contains a substance that can inhibit the production of amylase. A person regularly drinking hibiscus tea can thus prevent too much absorption of carbohydrates and consequently not gain excess weight.
- Treats cough and cold: Fresh hibiscus flower contains around 6.7 mg of ascorbic acid, a form of Vitamin c which is one of the more essential nutrients needed by the body. It is also known to have anti-inflammatory and mild anti-bacterial properties. Hibiscus tea is often used as a supplement to help treat coughs and colds, because of its cooling effect, it is especially effective in reducing the discomfort of fevers that may accompany such ailments.
- Satiate thirst: Hibiscus tea can be drunk hot or cold. As iced tea, the infusion is known to satiate thirst quite effectively to avoid further temptation of intake of carbonated or other types of drink. It is often recommended as an alternative to artificially made commercial “sports drink” that are marketed to physically active individuals.
- It can serve as food supplement because of the other contents like calcium, iron, phosphorous, protein, fiber, carotene, thiamine, niacine, riboflavin and also boosts the immune system.
Here’s a quick tip on how to prepare Zobo drink at your convenience:
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup of dried Hibiscus sepal (Zobo leaves) depending on the number of people being prepared for.
- 4 cups of boiling water
- Juice of one lemon
- Ginger (optional)
- Sugar in small quantity
Direction
. Briskly wash the leaves to ensure the dust and sand are washed off.
. Set the leaves in a large bowl, dice some ginger into tiny pieces or grate and pour it in the bowl as well, cover with boiled water. Set aside for 2-4 hours to allow the drink to steep.
. Pour the drink through a sieve to separate the fluid from the leaves.
