The feud between the Senate and Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd), resurfaced on Monday in Abuja.
According to TheNation, trouble started when the Senate Ad- hoc Committee on Economic Waste in Nigeria visited the Customs Headquarters in Abuja as part of its oversight functions.
The drama was triggered by remarks made by Chairman of the Committee, Senator Dino Melaye, over the way the Senate delegation was received by the Customs high command.
Melaye said by protocol, the Customs chief was expected to come down from his office to welcome the committee members into the Custom premises. He said it was a breach of protocol for the Customs CG to casually meet the delegation at the conference room.
Melaye said the practice of ushering in the Senate delegation has been the practice with statutory bodies like Customs, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) and others over the years.
He wondered why such established etiquette which was the norm under previous Customs chiefs was not accorded the committee by Ali.
The Customs CG told the Senate delegation that the agency has its own protocol that is different from other public establishments.
Ali said: “We have our own protocol as regards receiving visitors like you. I don’t need to come downstairs to receive you just as nobody in the Senate or House of Representatives has ever come out to receive us anytime we visit the National Assembly.”

Babies who are born by caesarean are 50 per cent more likely to be obese before the age of five, research has found. They are also more likely to suffer asthma during childhood, while their mothers face greater threat of future miscarriage and infertility.
A review on the long-term risks of caesarean sections, which looked at 79 large scientific studies, found that an average of 9.2 in every 100 babies born naturally were obese before the age of five. But that rises to almost 14 out of every 100 babies for those who were born by caesarean.
This 51 per cent increased risk could be because babies surgically removed from the womb are not exposed to important bacteria as they would be if they had passed through the birth canal.Without it, their metabolism and their body’s ability to store fat may be affected.
The study was published in the journal PLOS Medicine.Dr. Sarah Stock, who was co-author of the review from the MRC Centre for Reproductive Health at the University of Edinburgh, said: “Although we cannot conclude that caesarean delivery causes certain outcomes, pregnant women and clinicians should be aware that caesarean delivery is associated with long-term risks for the baby and for subsequent pregnancies.
“The significance that women attribute to individual risks and benefits is likely to vary, but it is imperative that clinicians take care to ensure that women are made aware of any risk that they are likely to attach significance to.”Babies born by caesarean were nearly 20 per cent more likely to have asthma before the age of 12. Asthma rates rose from around 3.05 in 100 babies born naturally to 3.65 in every 100 who had C-section births.
This may also be due to missing out on bacteria in the birth canal, which can protect against the allergies which cause wheezing and breathlessness. The review shows women who have had caesareans are about a third less likely than those who have had a natural birth to fall pregnant again. This infertility may be caused by an injury or infection in the womb after doctors cut into it to remove the baby safely. Scarring of the womb could also explain a higher rate of miscarriage among women who have had a caesarean.
And scarring could explain the 40 per cent increased likelihood of ‘placental abruption’ – a condition where the placenta starts to come away from the womb wall before the baby is born, which can starve it of vital nutrients and stop the child growing properly. However, the study, which was published in the journal PLOS Medicine, also concludes that women who have a caesarean are less likely to suffer urinary incontinence or a pelvic prolapse.(Guardian)

Nigerian singers Davido, Wizkid and South African comedian Trevor Noah make the list of the most followed Africans on the social networks Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, a report has said.
According to campsbaymedia, the African Social Media Power Report: Top 50 Footballers and Entertainers was released on January 26.
The Power 50 has a combined following of almost 400million, a number that is more than half the population of Europe and twice the population of Nigeria, Africa’s most populated country.
The Power 50, which weighs the social media influence of African pop culture stars and football personalities, was compiled by Lagos-based sports communication company, CampsBay Media.
“In a world where social media continues to play a big role, the influence of African entertainers and footballers, the crème of popular culture on our continent, continues to fascinate and that is why we have compiled this list,” said Lolade Adewuyi, chief strategist at CampsBay Media.
“We have tried as much as possible to gather the top African pop and sport stars into the list in order to show their influence across the three key social media platforms of Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
We hope that the Power Report will be an annual ranking to gauge their growing impact as well as enable market planners and researchers to see the possibilities inherent in their
influence.”
Personalities from 12 countries are represented on the list with the top 10 places filled by Musician Akon, footballers Mohamed Salah and Didier Drogba, Moroccan stand-up comedian Gad el Maleh, Cameroonian footballer Samuel Eto’o, Moroccan actor Jamel Debbouze, Nigerian singer Wizkid and South African actress Charlize Theron.
Also on the report are 13 actors/actresses, 14 singers, nine rappers, eight footballers, four comedians and two music producers/DJs.
The report also includes a list of the top 50 African footballers and top 50 African entertainers on the three social media platforms.

The United States announced Monday it was lifting its ban on refugees from 11 “high-risk” countries, but said those seeking to enter the US would come under much tougher scrutiny than in the past, Punchng reports.
Applicants from 11 countries, unnamed but understood to include 10 Muslim-majority nations plus North Korea, will face tougher “risk-based” assessments to be accepted.
“It’s critically important that we know who is entering the United States,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
“These additional security measures will make it harder for bad actors to exploit our refugee program, and they will ensure we take a more risk-based approach to protecting the homeland.”
The 11 countries, hit with a ban in October in the Trump administration’s revised refugee policy, have not been identified officially.
But refugee groups say they comprise Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, North Korea, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
– Not a ‘Muslim ban’ –
Speaking anonymously, a senior administration official told journalists that the policy of enhanced security assessments for the 11 countries was not designed to target Muslims.
“Our admissions have nothing to do with religion,” the official said, adding that there is “nothing especially novel” about tougher screening for countries deemed to have a higher level of risk.
Donald Trump has pursued a much tougher stance on immigrants and refugees from all countries since becoming president one year ago.
His predecessor Barack Obama set refugee admission in fiscal 2017, which began on October 2016, at 110,000.
When Trump took office a year ago, he slashed that to 53,000, a number that was cut again to a maximum of 45,000 in fiscal 2018.
But refugee arrivals this year could come in significantly lower than that, due to the backlog from the 120-day halt and a slowdown in processing because of generally tougher applicant reviews.
DHS would not explain what the tougher vetting measures for the 11 countries would include.
But all applicants are being asked to supply more detailed histories and evidence of their past activities, and many are having to allow access to personal electronics and social media accounts.
The move comes as Trump presses for a sharp turn in overall US immigration policy that critics say will result in a 50 percent cut in arrivals each year and bias admissions away from African, Asian and Muslim countries.
Last week, Trump proposed to end the 27-year-old “green card lottery” program that aims to diversify the source of immigrants, leading to an upturn in those from Middle Eastern and African countries.
He also proposed to tightly limit the family members who can join immigrants to only spouses and younger children. Until now, such “chain migration” could extend to immigrants’ parents, grandparents, siblings and extended family.
The White House said the policy was necessary to protect national security from terror and crime threats.
In return, Trump proposed a plan that offers 1.8 million young unauthorized immigrants known as “Dreamers” a path to citizenship over 10-12 years.
Democrats and Republicans are starting negotiations on those proposals, along with Trump’s request for a $25 billion “trust fund” to build a wall on the southern US border to deter illegal border-crossers from Mexico.

Singer, Yemi Alade has called out other female singers for not supporting each other in the music business.
She blamed pettiness and their lack of vision for the small number of ladies in the Nigerian music Industry via her snap. She tried to encourage the female artiste to emulate their male counterparts through cooperation.
‘Ladies can we just get together, respect each other and not put ourselves against each other. Because we put ourselves against each other that’s why the whole world always put us against each other.
I know about female artists who when you want to feature them on an album they have to be the only female artiste on that album. If they are not the only one on the album they won’t feature, that is why we are so few.”
It’s so petty, we are the cause of our downfall. Go and see the guys and see how they are doing well and killing it, it’s by cooperation and division of labour, we can’t do it alone” the singer concluded.

Wearing a natural look is the in-thing, from nude make up to natural hair.
However, making the transition from relaxed hair to natural hair is not so easy. Most people would say that natural hair is more difficult to maintain and that is said with good reason- they don’t know the following secrets I am about to share with you.
Thus, don’t be fazed by the possibility of going natural. The following secrets will equip you.
1. Give it time
The first 6-8 months of going natural are critical. Your scalp and hair follicles are healing after all the artificial products you used to load on it. Thus, bear with it and afterward, you will see that it will get easier from then on.
2. Don’t use too many products
Manufacturers know that with the latest trends, natural hair products is a huge market but don’t be fooled by every product that claims it is organic. I advise you make your products yourself with ingredients like coconut oil, shea butter, avocado, honey etc. If you must buy, go for trusted products and don’t overload them on your hair. Use products sparingly on your hair so you don’t have to wash too often which could make your hair dry.
3. Research
What you don’t know can harm you. If you simply dedicate time to reading up about natural hair before you take the step, all myths will be dispelled.
4. Treat it with care
Natural hair is the one that needs the most attention. Try to keep it moist and avoid anything that will put too much tension on your scalp and the strands. This means you should stay away from hot hair equipment.
5. Experiment
Having natural hair means you may style your hair in ways you have never done before so be ready to go along with it and have fun.(Eskimi)

The outspoken US leader congratulated Rwandan President Paul Kagame on taking over as chair of the African bloc, which Trump said was a “great honour”.
“I know you’re going to your first meeting shortly. Please give my warmest regards,” Trump told Kagame after they held a one-on-one meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
According to news wire service AFP, the US president ignored questions shouted by journalists about his reported dismissal this month of African nations as “shithole countries”, during a meeting on immigration with congressional leaders.
The reported remark drew outrage around the world and prompted several African governments to demand explanations from their US ambassadors.
The 55-nation African Union chaired by Kagame demanded an apology, although Trump has denied making the remark as relayed by US lawmakers who were present at the meeting.
Trump said he had “tremendous discussions” in Davos with Kagame, who for his part said they had “good discussions” about the economy and trade.
