Tillerson will travel to “N’Djamena, Chad; Djibouti, Djibouti; Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Nairobi, Kenya; and Abuja, Nigeria,” between March 6 and 13, department spokesperson Heather Nauert announced Thursday.
The visit follows a scandal which erupted when President Donald Trump allegedly branded African nations “shithole countries” in January.
Tillerson will meet with leaders in each country, along with African Union leadership based in Addis Ababa.
“He plans to discuss ways we can work with our partners to counter terrorism, advance peace and security, promote good governance, and spur mutually beneficial trade and investment,” Nauert added.
During a November meeting with African Union ministers in Washington, Tillerson outlined only general policy goals regarding the continent. Meanwhile, so far, Trump has shown little interest in Africa.
Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama traveled to Ghana six months after taking office with a message that Africa’s destiny is in the hands of its own people.

U.S. President Donald Trump wants his daughter, Ivanka and her husband, Jared Kushner to leave the White House, local media reported on Friday.
Even though Trump wanted them to leave, he kept telling them that they should continue to be part of the presidential administration.
According to The New York Times, a number of Trump’s advisers expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that Kushner and his wife still had their job, in spite of the president’s indicating that they should resign.
The newspaper, citing several other Trump advisers that the president had told his eldest daughter and her husband that they should continue working at the White House even though he had asked White House Chief of Staff John Kelly to assist him in getting them to resign.
Ivanka and Kushner reportedly hold a grudge against Kelly, who they consider an obstacle to the president’s success.
The pair also believes that the chief of staff is against their presence in the White House, according to newspaper.
Following Trump’s victory in the 2016 election, his daughter and her husband became part of the presidential administration.
On Tuesday, U.S. media reported that Kushner’s security clearance was downgraded from Top Secret/SCI-level to Secret level due to procedural changes made by Kelly.
Commenting on the issue, White House Spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders said that Kushner would continue to play a significant role in the presidential administration.
Trump said that he considered the crackdown on Kushner groundless, but the issues related to security clearance were Kelly’s responsibility. (Sputnik/NAN)

A Lagos-based dermatologist, Dr Olayinka Adeyemi, on Wednesday warned people against applying body creams capable of causing skin bleaching.
Adeyemi told newsmen in Lagos that bleached skin under the pretext of beautifying it was prone to skin cancer, hypertension, and diabetics among other diseases.
The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that several people were in the habit of applying various body creams on their skins to make them look more beautiful without considering their negative effects.
He said that skin-lightning creams used in bleaching process contained steroid and hydroquinone which could adversely affect human skins.
“The steroid they use cause accumulation of fluid in the body which can cause cushioned syndrome. In this case, they can become hypertensive and end up having renal problem.
“A lot of things ranging from the skin effect to systemic effect, affect people who are using hydroquinone.
“When they tone, what happens is that some of these products especially the hydroquinone that is inside the product basically suppresses the melanin production.
“It makes sure that the skin thickness is thinned out. The strength of the skin is what actually thins out which is the dermis because the skin has three layers.
“The dermis has the strength of about 95 per cent on its own.
“When hydroquinone is used, the dermis is what thins out, meaning that the structural support of the skin will gradually be lost.”
The dermatologist said that those who engaged in bleaching risked their nails turning brown and were prone to suffering from body odour. They were liable to profuse sweat, hot feelings and discomfort during the dry season, he said.
Adeyemi explained to newsmen that the original skin of every human being was for body protection, adding that such skin would lose its immunity to protect the body once bleached.
“We are naturally protected by the original skin; a bleached skin is prone to cancer and other diseases because the chemical used would have removed the immunity from the skin.
“People need to be educated on how to take care of their original skin colour from birth. “God has a reason for creating us the way it pleases him; we must cherish our skin, be it black, caramel, or light complexion.
“It is lack of contentment and understanding that makes some people use various means to change their skin complexion,” he said He advised those who used skin toner or bleaching creams to see a professional aesthetic medicine physician, dermatologist on how to manage their skins.
He urged people to always use ordinary soap and cream on their skin.

Popular On-air personality Sensei Uche has written an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari‘s son, Yusuf. Yusuf Buhari was recently involved in a bike accident which led to him seeking medical assistance abroad.
Sensei Uche, who is also currently receiving radiotherapy treatment for a malignant tumour discovered last year, talks about how lucky him and Yusuf have been to be able to seek medical care outside the country whereas many Nigerians cannot do same.
Read the open letter below.
Hello Yusuf,
I write this letter as a brother and Nigerian, hoping that your recent experience has given you more insight, empathy and strength to look beyond yourself and live for the greater good of humanity.
Welcome back home brother. Thank God for granting you good health and more years on earth.
As I think about what led to your accident, I realise that the desire to live to the fullest, is something we both share. Power bike riding is an exciting pass time. And racing on a power bike, (laughs) you’re either an adrenaline junky or just down right crazy to do such.
I too look forward to a day I ride my bike across cities and towns in Nigeria.
I’m currently in Istanbul receiving radiotherapy treatment for a malignant tumour discovered in my nasal region last year. And it’s going well thank God. Now here’s why I’m writing you this letter. Note, what I’m about to point out is not your doing, just the way life designed our paths. So take no offence or feel guilt from it. Just know that there comes a time life teaches us lessons that will benefit the world we live in.
*You had the best medical care available to you in Nigeria when you had your accident. A team of some the best medical practitioners and minds in the country at your bedside.
*I am lucky to have had the tumour identified after months of test in clinics and hospitals. Of which I was told I had nothing more than an infection.
*You were flown out of the country as soon as you were stabilised, because the doctors I assume didn’t have the equiments and technology to continue with treatment. And note that the logistics of visa, funds and family support were all taken care off the table because of your status as the ‘First Son’ of Nigeria. I assume again that you had aides travel with you. All to make certain that your stay outside the country be comfortable and stress free.
*After my tumour was diagnosed malignant thank God, I spent four months of more test and scans to come up with the best form of treatment. Receiving two sessions of chemotherapy which turned out to be ineffective. And later resorted to crowd funding from Nigerians, which helped me get out of the country for better care. But like everyone going out of the country I had to go through the process of visa application in my critical state.
I could only afford to have a friend travel with me. He put his life on pause for a month to help me settle into the system.
We are lucky Yusuf. There are hundreds of thousands, if not millions of Nigerians, who are not as fortunate as us. They have died from ailments far less life threatening. All because they can’t afford the care and the lack of available medical facilities for treatment. They deserve the best medical care as Nigerians. Because they live in a land blessed with wealth and resources beyond imagination. Something I’m sure you’re benefiting from.
I believe we should all benefit from the resources our country is blessed with. And tribe, language, religion and social standing mean nothing to me when it comes to this notion. I strongly hope you share my sentiments as the first son of Nigeria.
It’s said that a father’s love knows no bounds. And I strongly believe that when your father heard you had been in a horrific accident, there was nothing he wouldn’t do to keep you alive. No amount would be spared for you to have the best care medicine could give.
Your father, is my president and the elected father of my nation Nigeria. I expect him to spare nothing when it comes to the welfare of it’s citizens. Because as citizens, we trust him to lead us with the best care and protection imaginable in the time he has been allocated.
I’m not writing this to lay blames on anyone, it’s a colossal waste of time. But instead I pray my words ignite a passion in you to help your father, with the time left of his term, put in place the foundations for real change that will benefit the people of Nigeria in all real change that will benefit the people of Nigeria in all aspects of life.
There is so much I want to say, but I’m afraid of writing too much.
I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody.
The words of your father, my president. Words that meant so much to me as I watched your father being sworn in as the fourth democratically elected president of Nigeria. The people of Nigeria are in need of a leader that will create the opportunities needed to make their lives better.
You know this Yusuf. If you don’t, put on a disguise and go on a nationwide tour to see for yourself. And maybe, just maybe, we can start to make the pledge a reality.
I look forward to meeting you, so we can sit down and plot a path to greatness for Nigeria by sharing ideas.
God bless you, and may God bless Nigeria.

According to Guardian Nigeria, South Korean President Moon Jae-in Thursday told Donald Trump that he plans to send a special envoy to Pyongyang, his office said, the latest in the Olympic-driven detente between the two Koreas.
An intense rapprochement saw the two Koreas march into the Games opening ceremony together behind a unification flag, and Moon shared a historic handshake with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong.
“In response to the visit by North Korea’s special envoy Kim Yo Jong, … Moon conveyed to Trump his plans to dispatch a special envoy to the North soon,” Seoul’s presidential office said in a statement following their phone conversation.
The two presidents also “agreed to maintain the momentum in inter-Korean dialogue and to continue efforts so it leads to the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula,” it said.
Moon has sought to use the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics that ended Sunday to open dialogue between Washington and Pyongyang in the hopes of easing a nuclear standoff that has sparked global security fears.
Pyongyang mounted a charm offensive during the Games, sending athletes, cheerleaders and high-level delegations following months of tensions over its nuclear and missile programmes.
Moon, who advocates dialogue with the North to defuse tension, said on Monday that Washington needs to “lower the threshold for talks” with the North.
In a meeting with North Korean General Kim Yong Chol on Sunday, Moon also urged the North to open dialogue with the US as soon as possible — to which Kim responded by saying the North was “very willing” to hold talks.
But the US has ruled out any possibility of talks before Pyongyang — which last year staged multiple missile and nuclear tests — takes steps towards denuclearisation.
There was no known interaction between the North and the US during the Games and Washington last week imposed what Trump described as the “heaviest ever” sanctions on the isolated regime.

The Federal Government on Thursday arraigned the Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja on two counts of giving false information about an assassination attempt on his life to the Police in April 2017, Punchng reports.
Melaye was accused of falsely incriminating the Chief of Staff to Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Mr. Edward Onoja David, in the said assassination attempt.
The offences were said to be punishable under sections 140 and 393 of the Peal Code Law, Cap. 89, Laws of Northern Nigeria, 1963.
He pleaded not guilty to the two counts filed against him by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation on January 31, 2018.
Shortly after his plea, his lawyer, Mr. Rickey Tarfa (SAN), moved his bail application filed on February 22, 2018.
The bail application was opposed by the prosecuting counsel, Mr. Shuaibu Labaran.
But in her bench ruling, the judge, Justice Olasunbo Goodluck, granted bail to the defendant after dismissing the prosecution’s opposition which she ruled was “based on inadmissible affidavit evidence.”
The judge granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N100,000, with one surety.
The judge ruled that the surety to be provided by the senator must be a federal civil servant of at least Grade Level 14 in any federal parastatal or establishment.
The surety must also provide proof to be a resident of the Federal Capital Territory.
Melaye was accompanied to the Thursday’s proceedings by about 11 senators, including Senators Ben Murray-Bruce and Shehu Sani.
