Epsy Campbell becomes the first black female person to be elected vice president in Costa Rica.
According to Newsweek, Epsy Alejandra Campbell Barr is one of the founders of the Part ido Accion Cuidadana (PAC), and she joins the ranks of Thelma Curling, the first Afro-Costa Rican legislator (1982-1986), Victoria Garron, the first vice-president (1986-1990) and Laura Chinchilla (2010-2014) the first president, with her landmark achievement.
Speaking on her election, Campbell said:
“It would not be the first only in Costa Rica but in Latin America. And eventually, if the president leaves the country, [I would be] the first woman of African descent to assume the presidency of the entire American continent. It’s a big responsibility.
It will be a responsibility not only to represent people of African descent but to represent all women and men in the country, a country that gives us all the same opportunities.”
Campbell’s paternal grandparents migrated from Jamaica to Costa Rica, where she was born in 1953 and named after her grandmother, Epsy.
The election was a clear win, Alvarado triumphing against Fabricio Alvarado, an evangelical singer who ran on an anti-same sex marriage campaign.

American and Chinese scientists have identified how a multi-functional enzyme works to fight diseases including HIV infection and autoimmune disorders.
The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has detailed how the enzyme called “SAMHD1” managed to inhibit proteins that stimulate the immune response in human and mouse cells.
SAMHD1 is a cellular enzyme, responsible for blocking replication of HIV in dendritic cells, macrophages and monocytes.
This, they said, opens up the possibility of finding ways to turn this activity on and off and making way for new therapeutic approaches for hard-to-treat diseases.
The paper’s senior author Wu Li, a professor in Ohio State University’s Centre for Retrovirus Research, and colleagues from China’s Wuhan University, have illuminated the way in which “SAMHD1” act as a neutraliser of potentially harmful responses during viral infection.
The researchers said that lacking this enzyme due to “SAMHD1” gene mutations can activate the human immune system and increase inflammation.
“SAMHD1 is responsible for balanced regulation of the immune response, but it also could limit HIV or other viral infections and alter the progression and treatment of certain cancers,” Wu told Xinhua.
“We need good immune responses, obviously, but we don’t want overwhelming immune activation.” Wu said the enzyme could break down a DNA building block in our cells – to act as “molecular scissors.”
“Too much of this building block due to SAMHD1 deficiency caused by genetic mutations can lead to autoimmune diseases and help cancerous tumors grow.
“If we can find a way to cut off or reduce the supply, the disease might not be viable, like a car without gas.”
“Because inflammatory pathways influence nearly all diseases in humans and animals, including HIV infection and cancers, identification of SAMHD1 as an inhibitor of immunity may have far-reaching implications in biomedical research,” he said.

Femi Adesina, special assistant to the President Muhammadu Buhari on media and publicity, has said Buhari will not reply former president Olusegun Obasanjo‘s most recent criticism, The Cable reports.
Obasanjo, while hosting the New Nigeria Group in Abeokuta, described the Buhari-led administration as a failure.
Adesina, addressing the comments, said Obasanjo was Buhari’s superior in the military, and so Buhari has nothing to say.
Obasanjo’s most recent comments aren’t any different from what he wrote in his open letter, Adesina said, and that has already been addressed.
Obasanjo’s comments are merely opinions, Adesina added. He said:
The thing I will like us to establish is that President Muhammadu Buhari will never join issues with former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Former president Obasanjo was his superior in the military. President Buhari was a minister under his military regime, so President Buhari will never join issues with him.
What former president Obasanjo has just said is not different from what he said in his letter of January 23 and an adequate response has been given to that letter by the minister of information, Lai Mohammed.
The response that Alhaji Mohammed gave to that letter suffices for whatever Obasanjo has said. It’s an opinion and the thing about opinions is that they are free.

Recently evicted housemate Teddy A has received invitations for music collaborations from Nigerian pop artist Iyanya and BBNaija season two first runner up Bisola.
The two musicians, who are signed on the same management platform, reached out to Teddy A through their Twitter accounts after his eviction on Sunday.

Meanwhile, other Nigerian stars have been drumming support for Teddy A right after his eviction, especially the growth of his music with some urging him to utilise the platform.

Teddy A was evicted on Sunday after securing total 16.81 per cent of the votes, coming third after Nina and CeeC.
The housemate, who was best known for his musical prowess, spent the most part of his stay in the house glued to his love interest BamBam.
However, in a twist, BamBam was evicted on Saturday after the party, which left Teddy A feeling down as he visibly shed tears.
The ex-housemate reiterated the need to focus on his music now that his time on the show is over.
This leaves CeeC, Nina, Rico Swavey, Miracle, Tobi, Alex, Anto, Lolu and Khloe to continue the battle for the 45 million naira star prize.
