Recession: Should Ministers’ Salaries be Reduced?
07:48Tough times require touch measures.
Pundits and policy makers are looking for ways to shore-up the Naira in the face of the economic recession.
The economic team headed by the Vice-President prescribed the sale of national assets in order to balance the budget deficit. But a cross-section of Labour unions kicked against it.
Recently, the Senate also said it was against such move.
"The senate oppose sale of National Assets to shore up Foreign Reserves" – Senate Leader, Ali Ndume

One such pundit, is Channel TV’s head of Business News, Boason Omofaye.
And he prescribes that salaries of Ministers should be reduced. It turned into a debate when Dr Joe Abah,Director General at Bureau of Public Service Reforms, countered the suggestion.
Here’s how the discourse went.
Time for Nigeria to cut salaries and benefits of Ministers, etc and shave the payroll too.

@BBoason Boason, you're still on this track? It's a blind alley o. Ministers earn less than N1m per month. What do you want it cut to?
— Dr. Joe Abah (@DrJoeAbah) September 27, 2016
@DrJoeAbah Okay Sir. Lead me into lights. We can cut benefits, monthly expenses, meals, etc of Ministers, Legislators, Aides at all levels

@DrJoeAbah Lets improve civil service/public sector work environment, then put measures/reforms on habits, attitudes, discipline, rewards
— Boason Omofaye (@BBoason) September 27, 2016
@BBoason Improve civil service work environment=increase recurrent costs=complaints from you about cost of governance. Make up your mind Oga
— Dr. Joe Abah (@DrJoeAbah) September 27, 2016
@DrJoeAbah Increase cost should = Increased Performance & Output that everyone can see and feel. If it doesn't, then there's serious prob
— Boason Omofaye (@BBoason) September 27, 2016
@BBoason Sorry Sir. You're just preaching from the comfort of your plush offices. Why don't we arrange a 1 week internship for you?
— Dr. Joe Abah (@DrJoeAbah) September 27, 2016
@DrJoeAbah Maybe a Town Hall with verifiable facts & figures can lay to rest speculations, perceptions that's rife but repeatedly denied
— Boason Omofaye (@BBoason) September 27, 2016
@BBoason No. A Town Hall will make no difference. Salaries are public but you still don't believe. You need to come live the experience!
— Dr. Joe Abah (@DrJoeAbah) September 27, 2016
What’s you take on this?
